Sorry if the answer has already been given to another subscriber, but can I have some advice on landing.
We will have our passports back next week, and need to land before October 2005.
Our daughter will be in school in the UK until May 2006, from which time we shall move to Canada permanently.
If we "land" in 2005, do we still have to list our household contents etc? and if so, what happens to that list which will inevitably change over the following 12 months if we have to add items to it, or take some off.
I appreciate the list has to be detailed, but do we need to give book titles etc, and do our clothes have to be listed individually, or just given under the general term "Clothing".
Any other general advice on landing would be appreciated.
many thanks

I have been told that you do have to give that list at time of landing, but you can take as long as you want to bring it over as it is on record. But you only get this one time offer.
However the list does not have to be too detailed. Obviously the important things are those of value you will definatley know are going to go and larger items. And are the things that customs would be interested in ie, computer, electrical (not that many are of use) jewellery/antiques etc.
The rest you can put 1 box of childrens toys.
50 music CD's. Assorted box of books fiction. 4 boxes childrens clothes etc.
They will be looking for any large numbers of certain things, that you may be trying to bring in and sell.
My husband has hundreds if not thousands of CD's and i am sure they will ask why. bascially he is a music nut, so are are children.
I think if you had extra clothes , toys etc, there is no problem.
We thought we would box up, say the kitchen pans, plates, cutlery etc. and say assorted kitchen utensils crockery, used value £xxxx. Then if the contents varied because we broke a few plates in packing it would not matter.
I have never heard of anyone having there stuff searched that thoroughly at customs, when they are emigrating, as most use a removals firm to pack and freight and i think they have to list contents too, and customs rely on them to give correct info.
Just watch if you take garden tools, furniture pots etc, they are funny about soil! so they may aks questions about those items, or fumigate them!
