Anyone able to advise with the following?
1) Regarding employment references - it talks about these in the plural...anyone know how many you're supposed to submit with your application?
2) Regarding dependent children - my partner has a 16yr old and an 18yr old, but they are living with their dad and step-mom in the USA. Do we need to include them in our application?

You need to give as much info as possible. If I remember right you need to account for every month of employment since 18. If you have already got references from then send them all. If you cannot get references then you should explain why. Two of the firms I worked for are no more, but luckily I kept references. It was very threadbear. I also backed it up with any evidence that I worked there. Letters written on headed paper to me, wage slips P45 etc.
( All my years of hording paperwork paid off. I found stuff going back over 20 years)
You do need to give full details of all children, regardless of whether they are likely to go to Canada or not. However there are two forms. The main application form, must include all "dependant children" that are going with you , or MAY want to be with you in the near future.
You can chose whether you want to include them or not. If you do include them they will have to have a medical. This is regardless of whether they go with you or not.
All dependent children under 22 if not accompanying their parent at the time, can be sponsored at a later date if required.
If something happened to the childrens father, and they needed to get to Canada, all their details would be on file and they could get their quicker.
If they have no contact with you or are never likely to want to go to Canada before they are 22 then you can chose, to name them in the additional information sheet, BUT they are not included in the actual application. AND they do not have to have medicals done.
I believe you may have to give a statement explaining why you do not want them to be included in the application.
I know one lady whose son did not want to go, and she was asked for a notorised statement that she understood that she could not sponsor him in future and he did not want to be included.
Have a look through the application guide below.

Hi gooding,
thanks for that on dependant children, we did not put my stepdaughter(hubbys daughter) on the main application because she does not live with us , she lives in Dubai with her mother, and she is nearly 18, and her father has no intention of sponsering her at later date. But we did put her on the other form as a member of family. We were worried that we should of put her down on the main one, but from what you say we are right in not doing so. Also we do not have any contact with her since a year ago now. Do you think immmigration will won't any further infomation about her and would she be asked to do a medical? It is now 12 months since our AOR and have nothing back from CHC about this.

I remember you and me asked similar questions months ago. I have A0R March.
I have noticed that the guide that I quoted has been updated since I applied and I think several items are made clearer, but if I look back at earlier posts, i still read different advice.
I have read it as you have done. Doesn't matter how many times I read it.
If the girl is not at school or UNI she is not a seen as a dependent anyway, so she would have to apply in her own right. ( not that she would)
In some cases they ask for an affidavit making you state that you understand that she is not included in the application and that you can never sponsor her, therefore you are asking immigration to wave the need for medicals and any future right to bring her into Canada.
This is because they had a lot of people getting a foot in the door in Canada, then claiming for children, that they new would fail the medical, if taken at the time of application.
The problem with including all dependants, that are not intending to go to Canada, is, if they were to fail the medical ALL of you would not get in.
I have two step children, the eldest is 19 and at Uni, she does not want to go now, nor do I think she will want to before she is 22, but we decide to put her on the application, just incase. The youngest is 15 and totally dominated by his mother, and until he is free to speak his own mind, will have to stay here until he is allowed to make his own decisions. But again we wanted to leave the door open, as you never know what may happen.
If you said 2 years ago we were applying to live in Canada I would have laughed!
I think you had best wait until you hear something, they will ask if they want any more info, but no point in speculating until you know exactly what, and if.With two out of three marriages breaking up , I am sure you are not the first or last in a similar situation, and it is probably more common that not.i think they say 1 ot of 3 fathers lose touch with their children permanantly,
so there must be thousand sof applicants like you.

Just been looking at the forms on CHC which have changed since our applicaton, There is now a checklist that includes details of what to send if people are not included in your application. Item 10. non accompanying family members.
Just thought it might help to get letter right.
