Just thought I'd provide an update to my original post. I spent a week in Calgary in August and had 7 interviews with agencies. I felt that each and every interview went very well and the recruiters were all very friendly and positive about my situation (WP required etc). I have been put forward for a number of IT jobs but my experience has been that no-one is willing to go down the WP route. So, I'm now pursuing opportunities with my existing company that has an office in Toronto and hoping to get an intra-company transfer - holding thumbs! If this route doesn't pan out my wife will study full time in Toronto (very expensive as an international student) and I will try get an open work permit. Hopefully we'll get there eventually!
