Hi All
I'm planning on moving with my wife, 2 kids and 2 cats to Calgary in January 2008 on a Work Permit. I'll be in Calgary in September to try secure a job in the IT industry. I am currently an IT Team Leader for a global investment bank in the UK.
I would be grateful if anyone has any contacts/friends in IT in Calgary that I could possibly forward my resume to? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi cruso
Dont know if you have seen the Careers (Canada) Wiki Pages - has a ton of hints and tips on there.
Another part of the Wiki explains different ways to work and live in Canada and there is also a section on there fr IT workers too.
Sorry dont have any IT contacts but
if you work for a Global Investment Bank do they not have an office in Alberta and would you qualify for an Intra Company Transfer ?? Just a thought

Hi Cruso and welcome to the board
We are hoping to go to Calgary on a WP by end August, or maybe september with 2 kids and no cats.
Just a word of warning- your timeline is quite tight! Albertan LMOs are currently taking 12-15 weeks, even assuming you applyfor WP at port of entry it makes it quite tricky, unless of course you go on an inter company transfer and then you are LMO but not WP exempt

Some IT people are LMO exempt if the original poster clicks on the link for the wiki about working in Canada there is a link in there where he/she could check if this applies

An intra-company transfer would be awesome, but unfortunately my company does not have an office in Calgary
. I'm hoping to get a job offer in Sept which would give me 12 weeks to get the LMO. I might qualify under NOC 9990.5 and be exempt from getting the LMO. I'm planning to meet with job agencies in Sept and send my resume out a few weeks before I leave.
Thanks for the links above they have some excellent info. My gut feeling is networking with people in Calgary is the way forward. Most of the jobs I have secured have been a result of a friend or friend of a friend...

Have to admit the Canadians do like to be able to talk face to face with people - just dont give up hope and do as much networking etc as you can in September. You never know you could find a recruitment agency or something on the web

Presumably you have looked on workopolis? which seems quite good for technical roles
Good luck

Another thought ................................
Do a forum search in here for "IT" and have a look through the threads.
Could be a lot of information on there, maybe contacts or specialist recruitment agencies which could help you too.

Hi there,
I know that EDS have an Office of about 500 pers in Calgary (as I work for them in UK) if you try their eds.com website you may find details for their Canada Office. I seem to remember that a lady called Dawn Lonsdale was their HR rep. A general number for their Calgary Office is 403-508-4500 and try getting through to HR?
Good luck

Canadian Company Capabilities is a website that is maintained by a government department called Industries Canada. It's a good place to find out who the players in a given sector are.
It's mentioned in the BE Wiki article on Careers in Canada to which Gaynor (burtonbunch) provided a link, but I thought I'd draw it to your attention because it's a good source of information.
