It was -22 beside Springbank Airport this morning. I took Oscar, our short haired GSD out to attend to a call of nature and had to carry him back into the house when he collapsed due to the cold.

We've just had the first serious snowfall of the winter here, been whomping it down all morning, bright now though and v. pretty looking out from the windows. Probably had a good couple of inches and the piles at the side of my driveway are building up to a good foot or so..............now realised we didn't buy a big enough shovel ! All last week we had temps of around -15 give or take a few degrees either way and you know what, when the sun was shining I really didn't think it was too bad, no worse than a cold winters day in my part of the UK. I'm damn sure - 30 will be a different story though.

And minus 30 isn't that much different to minus 15. It's just colder.

We rub vaseline on the paws before going out, it helps but means streaks of vaseline all over the house. We also stick the paws in a bucket of warm water when we come in. Dogs in winter are troublesome but it's nothing compared to the mud season.

You shouldn't use warm water believe it or not, just cold water, otherwise you could damage blood vessels in the poochies paws, also cold water doesn't hurt like warm does.. remember, if it can pour from the tap, it's still warmer than outside
