I had my Car broken into in Essex (suprise!) a couple of years back... They popped the back window and stole speakers, amp, and stereo.
I called the cops, who said they'd be in touch.... I Called back two days later... and they gave me a reference number, but they would be in touch.... 3 months down the line and nothing from the police, so I kicked up a stink... Next day i've got the regional head-honcho around looking at the old screen trying to get some prints off it!.... Appeared to be a "dont go to the local rag" style effort by him!.... His excuse was that they are not likely to catch the kids that did it so they put car crime at the bottom of the list.
Fair enough
however, if you do not record the stuff that has been nicked it will make it even less likely that you will catch the kids!
Then if the guy driving the van gets pulled over with a bunch of moody goods in the back.... how do you know they're moody??
And it may not be high-up on the importance rankings.... however druggies need cash, they get their cash by stealing, that cash funds drug gangs, and up it goes, on and on....
Maybe a bit of effort on the smaller stuff could have a big effect higher-up??
That got him worried.... and he left very, very apologetic!

Having said that..... dont take it to the Calgary extreme of Radar-trapping Cyclists and Roller-Bladers on the riverside path!!
Especially when you only have to open your eyes on Stephens Ave to see worse things going on!!

I think you're being unfair on the police.
There are only so many of them, and they have more important criminals to catch.
Like people smoking in company cars / vans, or banging up octogenarian peace protesters......
John Catt, an 80-year-old peace campaigner, was stopped by police officers as a terrorist suspect in Brighton in September - for wearing a T-shirt with anti-Blair and Bush slogans.
Mr Catt, who served in the RAF during the Second World War, was stopped, searched by police and made to sign a form confirming he had been interviewed under the 2000 Terrorism Act.

Hi Debbie,
Only reading this now as I've been offline. That's a right bugger. Not that Canada is a crime free zone, (far from it), but can well imagine this underlines your desire to get out here just as soon as you can. Don't you wanna just string 'em up, the little b**tards. Our thoughts are with you.
Eamonn & Janet.

Hi all , ...
I was more amazed at the police when i rang them they just gave me a crime number ! I asked if they were going to visit and they just said no. I feel so angry how on earth are these criminals ever going to caught and taught a lesson if no one investigates it ??

A bit different here,
A house across the road has been vacant for many months, one evening I came home from work and saw the front door was open, and wondered if anyone was moving in, next morning the door was still open, So I phoned the police non emergency line and reported it explaining what I had seen.
In about 15 mins, there were two police cruisers and a supervisors car across the road,
And this was an non-emergency call...
I watched the RCMP vehicles leave, and almost instantly had a phone call from one of the RCMP officers explaining what they found .. and what they were going to do next.
cheers

Canada may not be a crime-free paradise, but the police here actually seem to respond to the things people care about, rather than spend their time harassing the middle class over minor violations in order to get easy 'conviction' figures.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you get somewhere with the Home Insurance.
With the police getting a (rightfully so) bashing here was curious as to whether any one has an opinion on the police in Canada? Would this type of crime been met with the same lack of interest do you think? Just curious.

Hi Debbie... that is really rubbish!!! In our area the Crime Scenes team would have come out and at least tried to see if there were prints or anything, and also house to house and checking on any CCTV cameras would have been compulsory. Why don't you call them and ask them why this has not happened. I know I would! Debbie

Hi all ,

Well i have yet again been a victim of crime , Went out to my car yesterday morning to find all the doors open .I have been robbed !! They took everything i know most of you will say well you shouldnt of left things in the car . But i had packed the car up Monday evening to go and visit family in Manchester for a few days the sat nav , childrens dvd players and approx 40 dvds and cds ! I am gutted i feel so sick...
I was more amazed at the police when i rang them they just gave me a crime number ! I asked if they were going to visit and they just said no. I feel so angry how on earth are these criminals ever going to caught and taught a lesson if no one investigates it ??
Think the best thing to do,is leave it.
Would not get insurance in.as they would not pay out.

JimmyDean... not particularly bright response is it? Check out who you are name calling. My hubby is a copper and through no fault of his own he spends hours and hours on paperwork. Example, he had to spend over three hours completing all the various forms and related papers for a stolen sandwich and a scotch egg... and that was when he got the guy that did it, he admitted to the offence, and still it took that long! My hubby actually said that if it had been viable he would have paid the shopkeeper for the stuff and saved himself all that time to deal with the more serious stuff that he is called to. It is not the police themselves that make up the procedures... why do you think we are leaving this stupid country?
