I knew I could do the job and I did tweak my resume and wrote and rewrote my covering letter to pin point all the things they quoted as wanting to see in an applicant. I had also thoroughly researched the Council on the website before the interview and added my personal UK experience within local govt in answering some of their interview questions. Maybe my UK experience helped but it was a hard interview and they made me do two really challenging tests as well once it was down to me and one other candidate. Hopefully that answers your question. The Ross Family |

Congrats to the OP.
We managed to get jobs in the midst of recession here in Québec. My OH only applied for one job and got it - so there are opportunities. The best advice I found for this economic climate was here: http://movetomontreal.ca/2009/06/15/...r-in-montreal/ |

The best advice I found for this economic climate was here: http://movetomontreal.ca/2009/06/15/...r-in-montreal/ June alone I sent out 45 resumes, all with cover letters specific to that job, one thing I am finding is employers rather have a college degree even when the job doesn't need one but there are so many new graduates out of work, its hard to compete. |

There are always exceptions, but for majority looking for work right now its not as easy.

May I ask what your line of work is? I work in engineering.....I suppose anything to do with manufacture is being hit very hard. Even casual work, many seem to want some sort of experience....or ask you the question of "why do you want an career with us?...." I dont!!! I just want to work, to earn some money! as there is nothing in my line of work! Sorry for the rant, its just very frustrating....however I do have a few other options I can try at the moment for casual work anyway. Got to keep trying..... |

Yes folks you may remember my former rants about not being able to get a job. Well happy to publish that I managed to snag one after all and in local government to boot! In fact this is my second week on the job and all is going well.
I know that I have been very, very fortunate not only to beat the other 100 candidates that applied but to be taken on on a SOWP and as a non-Canadian. So just to let you know that it is not totally impossible to find a job but it will take a lot longer than orginally thought! I still keep pinching myself! :D:D:D:D:D The Ross Family |
