I know that I have been very, very fortunate not only to beat the other 100 candidates that applied but to be taken on on a SOWP and as a non-Canadian.

So just to let you know that it is not totally impossible to find a job but it will take a lot longer than orginally thought!

I still keep pinching myself! :D:D:D:D:D

Really pleased for you

Thanks everyone for your congratulations.

It took me 4 solid months of resumes, job websites etc but at the end of the day I found this in the local paper!

Fingers crossed :fingerscrossed: for all those still trying to secure work.

Everyone I know who is looking for work has been having an difficult time in various parts of BC. We have a hotel opening soon and they had a job fair in May for 70 positions and they had over 500 people show up just to the job fair, few jobs and lots of competition.

You didn't miss out on much - I had a client bring in the employment contract so I could look it over. No benefits, no guaranteed hours/shifts and a pound of flesh, basically. Utter rubbish. Try Safeway, they were hiring downtown last week as that area is slowly picking up.

I've not worked for a hotel yet that offered anything benefits wise other then discounted rooms within the chain. Most are non-union and independently owned, you really only see unions and good benfits at the larger hotels and resorts.

I've never had anyone want me to sign an employment contract before, not here nor in the US but maybe its a terminology issue.

Congratulations!!

I have a good idea what that must feel like....at last!

I have been here a month now, and I think I am going to struggle...not a sniff so far! think im in for the long haul, to make matters worse, I work in engineering, anything in manufacturing is going to be the last to pick up from this recession. Jobs of any kind are so scarce now.....

Anyway thats enough of my rant....well done on getting there!

Paul

PS Hope I dont have to wait 4 months!

Hi there - congrats on the job

Just out of interest, do you think you did anything different for this application? Had you recently tweaked your resume, or did you know anyone, or have any other links with the employer? Just interested really as everyone says networking is so crucial here. Do you think it was just a numbers game and you'd get a job some day, or was there anything special about this one ?

Re: I got a job

Ann M

I knew I could do the job and I did tweak my resume and wrote and rewrote my covering letter to pin point all the things they quoted as wanting to see in an applicant.

I had also thoroughly researched the Council on the website before the interview and added my personal UK experience within local govt in answering some of their interview questions.

Maybe my UK experience helped but it was a hard interview and they made me do two really challenging tests as well once it was down to me and one other candidate.

Hopefully that answers your question.
