KRoss is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Hydro costs

I am going to rent prior to buying a home in London Ont. Lots of the properties have all utilities included but a few have hydro as extra. Now I realise that air con in the summer increase costs etc, but I havent a clue as to what an "average bill" for a 2 bed apartment would be. Any help? I just want an idea.
Thanks

Don't know if this will help, but I have two-bed house not a million miles from London, Ont - it has electric baseboard heaters which are way too expensive for me to use - but I have a gas fire, which keeps the house toasty warm ; I cook with electric - as most Canadians do, and my monthly bill is around $43 (inclusive of taxes and my portion the debt we're all paying because the hydro company screwed up Big Time a few years ago )
Forgot to say - I don't have AC - just use ceiling and floor fans, which aren't as good as AC, but much, much cheaper.

Generally when the hydro is "included" it encourages waste - if you are doing pay as you go and are concious about your expenses go for a unit where you pay your own.

5 or 6 years ago when I was in an apartment I was paying about $60 a month total, including water heater rental.

Now in the house I am paying $130-140 a month:scared:

Dont know...and dont want to go back to find out!

I dont think kwh charges have gone up hugely since then, the biggest issue now is Im paying Hydro One and there is some insane amount of bullshit charges before you even begin to pay for consumption. Plus the house is twice as large or more, and probably not as modernly insulated, and there is central air and a wife and kid home most of the time.

That IS scary! My gas and hydro together are less than that - and this is quite a large house - only 2 bed, but has a huge finished basement. My (gas) water heater is rented at $54 every quarter.

I'm at home most of the time - must be the hot flashes keeping me warm!

I laughed at your $43. Our bill (small 3 bed house with gas cooking and heat) averages $145 but is over $200 at this time of the year.

Weve got >$200 equalised monthly in oil on top of that for heat and hot water.

At least our property taxes are relatively cheap and we dont have to pay anyone for water/sewage.

My tenant in Calgary costs me 25-ish in the Summer in electricity, and up to 40 CAD in the Winter months. 1 bed+ den, 850sq ft apartment, free rein to use as much as they like.

Who was paying all the service connection fees etc. I suppose manitoba hydro doesnt have the nuclear debt retirement charge etc. Seriously some months most of my bill is for the connection not the electricity used! I suppose as a tenent that you might not usually see all that...just the usage, but it probably depends on your agreement with the landlord and the nature of the apartment.

The apartment is in Calgary, supplier is Enmax (not Enron as I keep calling them!), and that's my total bill inc. all charges for a tenant who can leave the lights on all day if he wants to, he has free rein. I appreciate charges aren't the same as ON for the OP but I thought it was useful in comparison of the size of the unit.

Our costs in Manitoba for a 3 bed semi are even lower per month, never much over 20 CAD, and that's with elec. cooking and someone home all day.

I get a shock everyday here in Calgary. Either the whole house is shorting out OR we have REAL bad static problems (I'm gonna hope its the second).
