I just found this site so... Hi!

I Live in Burlington Ontario and am a police officer for the region.... Struggle to get on with Canadians as I seem to offend everyone I come accross... When I really am not intending to do so. Are there any Brit club type sites where people actually get together for a sneaky pint or 2 that someone can point me in the direction of?

I have a lot of days like that too ... offending half the people I meet seems to be a skill I've developed since moving here ... fortunately I've made some good friends in the other half :thumbup:

Been to Burlington - it's a nice place, but sorry, no idea about other expats :(

Why is that do you think ? Please tell us if you have noticed any trigger points that "seem to offend everyone I come across". Is it "this is how it's done in Britain" or something similar ? Halitosis, B.O. ? The old "I'm a cop" syndrome. There must be a reason.

Not the "this is how its done in Britain" I avoid that unless my peers ask me. They seem to get very offended by profanity.... which is a staple in my dialect I am afraid. Also the word sarcasm does not seem to be in the Canadian dictionary.

Actually, this post reminded me of a question I'd been asking myself. Have posted it up. In fact, maybe ExMetCop can answer it, it's in the Maple Leaf.

I have to say that gratuitous profanity and sarcasm would rapidly turn me off too and I think that I can cuss with the best of them. I would mention it to you the first couple of times and after that I'd stay away. Why do you need to do it ? Are profanity and sarcasm so ingrained that you can't hold a conversation or interact without it. Lots of people on here are malevolently sarcastic thinking that it's humorous. It usually isn't. What might be OK in your locker room might not be acceptable to others. Think about it.

This was a very Canadian reply indeed. Sure youre an expat?

I have not sworn in my posts and I am not talking about every other word being that of vulgarity lol. I guess what I was trying to say is back home my friends and I would engage in "banta" which would involve a certain amount of "sarcasm" and maybe a small amount of "profanity". I was just trying to share my thoughts on how I find it hard to adjust to their social ways.... But thanks for your reply.... :blink:

You have answered your own question. If you want to solve the problem cut down on your obviously unwelcome, gratuitous profanities. Which UK dialect is laced with profanities? Use of them only suggests to others that you are an ignorant, ill-mannered, uneducated lout, whether that be true or not.

ps. I can swear with the best of them, when necessary, but not every second word out of my mouth.

rightly or wrongly its a cultural divide, you either bend or break i am afraid. or, you can have nothing but expats as friends, though i would not recommend it.

you are new around here, this how it goes sometimes, don't take offence or get pissed off, its just an internet chat room after all. what i would say is that you asked a question, so got a range of replies, maybe this can give some insight?

i think, myself included, induction by fire seems to be the order of the day for new posters. most of the time you could argue its their own fault, but i think a little leniency and understanding is in order for the most part.

I used to do IT contracts in the City of London where I worked with lots and lots of Essex boys and girls, so I learned bad habits - first thing I had to do in Canada was clean up my potty mouth :o

Tried gee, shoot and shucks for a while, finally settled for not using expressive language at all :(

You may think it makes people sound ill educated and ill mannered - I would disagree and say that says more about you than them. When will people learn that swearing makes you sound big and clever - it's that simple.

Well I'm glad to see that you haven't taken Simon's and Auld Yin's comments to heart. A right pair they are.

Burlington is a bit far afield, but now and again there are BE meetups in Toronto: in fact I feel the need to suggest one soon. You can get there on the via thingy.
