lugging one across the world, would have the same issues though...and those things are more a pain in the arse to harvest the parts if you need to get at the hard drives

I've shipped my PC, monitor and printer - all were 100-240v compatible.

I backed up all my photos onto the hard-drive of an MP3 player! If you've got an i-Pod or similar with plenty of space left, you might be surprised how simple it is! Granted - mine was a spare hard-drive that I had replaced and put into a casing, but I just took it on as hand luggage.

Also, I was fretting that I may have to ditch my CPU or fork out to have the power supply replaced as a sticker on the back said "240v - UK only". I went on the HP website and checked the computer spec and it said the same thing.

Then, I peeled the "240v..." sticker off the back and what should I find underneath?

You guessed it - a switch for knocking the power down to 110v...

Alas it isn't bus powered and therefore increases considerably the faff factor. Since 2.5" low-power laptop drives don't come much bigger than 100Gb, anything suspiciously large is likely to be based on the heavy-usage 3.5" IDE drives.
