In Alberta the average student leaves school at 18 with a high school diploma. If you come over at 16 with British GCSE they are not the same as a Alberta High school diploma worked at for 3 years till you are 18!

The school counsellor will give you credits for the GCSE but in most cases more subjects will need to be completed to get the High school diploma.

Once you have your high school diploma then you can go one to apprentiships, uni, college et .

The youth I have met and this includes my two relatives who have not got their high school diploma seem to get jobs 'flipping burgers' or something similar.

No - You can do your apprenticeships through/during/while in high school and get credits towards your HS diploma and hours towards your ticket, and get work experience and get paid - It's called the RAP program in Alberta.
