He can quit at 16.
GCSE's won't count for much.
He could go to highschool and get the highschool diploma, and enter an apprenticeship program at the same time if he wants.
If you know where you are moving to google the local highschool, phone them and talk to the guidance counsellor .

You're shouting at us again............!! The answer will be in the Wiki link you were given earlier so have a read of that.
One thing to bear in mind though is that if you are going via a TWP then he won't be able to work at all until you are PR's - quite often that causes a problem with elder teenagers as they want to get Saturday jobs, part-time work, etc (or even full time work if they've left school) but can't.

My son came to NS at the age of 16 (January birthday) after he had completed his GCSEs. He was given credits for them at his new school and entered half way through Grade 10. He is now Grade 12 and will be heading to Uni after summer. He loves his school here

We came here on a WP and it took 9 months for our PR to come through so it's not so long to wait if he wants a part-time job. Until then he cannot work at all because he will be on a study permit and cannot get a WP in his own right. If he does not attend school he still cannot work until he is a PR.

Kids normally graduate at 18 having passed their HSD, though they can stay on an extra year to 19 to improve their grade if they choose to.

My Son was 16 coming over having just sat his GCSE's. As mentioned here they stay on until 18 for their high school diploma. Credits will be awarded to your child for any GCSE passes that he/she has ( when they register the school counsellor takes all the paperwork and arranges this) towards their diploma.

Most children start highschool at the age of 13 which is grade 9 and finish at the age of 18 or 19 which is grade 12 or a year longer if they want to go to University. If your child wants a college education then finishing grade 12 is all you need to get into college with the appropriate subjects for the course of study.
So...
Age 5-13 jr. Kindergarten- grade 8 (10 years of schooling if junior kindergarten is taken) then off to highschool.
Age 13-18/19 Highschool grade 9-12 (4/5 years schooling depending on if going to college or university) then off to college of university
If a child wants to take an apprenticeship yes for some you can be 16 but also need to have completed certain subjects
My husband just moved from UK last year after we married with a computer science degree from UK uni which he had changed over here in Guelph for 120 dollars and it meant nothing but a 3 year ontario college diploma and very hard to find a job without Ontario experience. He went to college here in ontario last year as a diesel truck mechanic and is now apprenticing as a diesel truck mechanic and will have his full licence in 3 years YAY!!! So it was worth it for him and he loves it because at the age of 31 he says he would not be able to get a trade in the UK and its the best thing he's ever done. Now that he's sorted we will buy a house and stop renting.... it was difficult for him but also easy as I am from Ontario which helped tremendously. Overall the move went well and has been very positive and he doesnt want to move back to UK ever he loves it here in Ontario! Any other questions feel free to send me a message.

Here in Calgary, the norm is Elementary grades 1-6, Junior High grades 7-9, and Senior High grades 10-12.
For many jobs, graduation from grade 12 at least is required. There is, however, a growing concern over kids being "lured into high-paying driving jobs" etc, and quitting school before graduation.

Good point and good that you gave information for outside Ontario.

Whilst I realsie that Ontario IS the centre of the universe, you should be aware that not all provinces are the same.

And to confuse matters further, some school districts in BC have junior high schools (grades 8-10) and senior high schools (grades 11-12).
And some school districts have "middle schools" (between elementary and high school).
Despite all this, grade 12 has always been the final year of high school for students in BC, so once they have graduated from grade 12 (the year they are 17 years old turning 18), they will receive their high school diploma and are ready to attend university the following September.
