Why the concern about crime?

I re-read it and it sounds like the worst of the problems were about six years ago, which is why it probably doesn't ring any bells. Here's the link to the article:

It's a valid concern. Somebody offered me some shards the other week (which I can only assume is drug lingo for meth). I don't know what I was more horrified by, the blatant criminality or the fact that some random dealer thought I looked like a meth-head.

Is it? I generally assume when I move to another western country there'll be a bit of crime, and none of them have let me down yet. It's just interesting to me that it's one of the first things Brits want to know about. You guys seem very concerned about it I have noticed. So I'm curious...why? is it so bad in the UK?

For me, it's a personal thing I guess. I was badly assaulted by a gang who seemed to be on alot of drugs/alcohol when I was in my twenties and I was ill for a long time. That was in a small town with a bad drug problem. So, I'm keen to avoid living in areas with lots of drug users and pissheads.
I don't know about other folk from the UK though. I guess people get sick of living in crime ridden areas, where nothing is done about it. Where I live it seems that people get too many slaps on the wrist and go on to do worse and worse things before they even wind up in court.
