Post Help with Resume

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread?

Anyhow, I have used Wiki (what great info there is on there) to build a (hopefully) Canada friendly resume. My question is, I'm a hairdresser and most of the work experience i have gained is the same in each job, i.e. styling colouring perming etc, not much in way of variation; so what ive done is listed the places and dates of employment in the various salons but instead of listing the same duties over and over again i've put under my job description same as above in "name of current place of work" would this be sufficient in your view? its just it would be 3 - 4 pages long otherwise and i'm trying to keep it clear and to the point!

Well please let me know what you all think!

Thanks a bunch

Nikki

I think you would be best served in writing a functional resume and then putting your employment history after that. Here is a sample I found through Google http://www.thepeoplebank.com/PDF/Functional_Example.pdf

Yes, Nikki, I think that is the best strategy for your resume.

I was going to say something about a functional resume, but have noticed that allie2 has beat me to it.

And, yes, this is the right place to have posted your thread.

Edited to add that I've now noticed this thread was not in the main Canada forum originally. It was moved here from the Immigration forum. But no harm done.

Hi all,

Again than you all so much for the help. Looking at it now it was quite obvious to have a functional resume; but while reading and sorting out the resume it can be quite bewildering. I just want to get it right to give me the best possible chance of being successful!

I will make the changes,

Again a very big thank you.

Hi again,

Just had a thought, would you say that you read speak and write in fluent English? Or would they (the potential employers) assume you do any way as I come from the UK?

thanks again

Hi Nikki

This book might help

'The Quick Resume & Cover Letter Book' Michael Farr in Canada, I'm sure Amazon will have it.

I now a Resume condensed to 2 pages with a fluffy covering letter, which I was successful in gaining an interview when I get to Canada. I'm in regular contact with the potential employer on his request following my Resume email.

Good Luck

K

PS How is Dav? I used to work there in 2001.

Hi Nikki,

You don't need to say that.

If you want me to have a look at your finished version, feel free to message me personally.

Hi K,

Dav is ok, I've only lived here 3 years ; They are building a new retail park, and want to put a canal arm in across the scout field (which we live next to).

I would have thought (from what the locals say) that there are a lot of new builds and less green fields since you were last here!!

Where did you work?

Nikki

P.S

I will definitely try and get hold of a copy of that book!!!

Where are you hoping to land in Canada? Whats your time line like?
We are fairly open as to where we go but Alberta and Ontario are our preference. Hoping to get a job and go!

Hi

When I typed up my husbands resume I wrote descriptions of the companies he worked for, the type of people they catered for as well as duties etc even though it was the almost the same for each job and people said it was good. I also put high school diploma for qualifications gained in high school.

hope this is some help. xx
