I live in the deep, deep SW near 22X ... it takes me 30 minutes minimum to get downtown, a bit longer if it snows.

Foothills Hospital is actually in the south of the NW next to the University ... it's in MLS district 413 St Andrews Hills if that helps you any.

Foothills MD is to the south of Calgary ... doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?

What's biggish?? Single family homes are usually around 2,000 sq ft.

Public, seperate (ie.catholic) or private schools?

Good transport? Buses are pretty useless, the c-train is good, roads are a world away from UK driving.

Amenities .... you mean like ice??

Was thinking of the c-train or any thing that my wife could use to get to work or will I have to get 2 cars?

Not too hard to find ... don't even look at the NE of Calgary ... not the best place to live.

Schools here expect to be "interviewed" - make an appointment with the principals of the areas you're looking at and arrange a tour.

Banff Trail station is closest ... it'll be a fair walk at -35C, not counting windchill. I used public transport for over year and those c-train stations are frikkin cold in Jan/Feb.

The thing to remember is that Calgary is big ... it has the biggest per person footprint of any Canadian city. I think I worked out it had triple the population of Leicester and took up ten times the space.

Calgary has a load of parks - supermarkets everywhere - not been to any NW bars, so I can't recommend any.

Don't see why not ... email them from the UK or phone them when you get here ... just don't turn up unannounced.
