Desperately seeking some advice please. My partner currently works in Scotland for Finning Uk. We are looking at Alberta and Ontario at the moment as our options to move to with our 3 children.
We have seen that Toromont Cat and Finning prefer you to have the red seal/journeyman certification before they will talk to you about possible employment
I have made contact with various colleges etc but can't find any answers. Is it possible to do all the paperwork here in the UK i.e hours worked etc and then fly over and sit the exam while on a holiday there?

Has anyone any experience/advice?

I did my red seal exam in BC so the application process may be a little different but I had to fill out the application to challenge the red seal exam and provide 9000hrs of work experience with references. Once that was sent off, ITA BC made their decision. If they allow you to challenge the exam, then you have 1 year to do sit it and it has to be done in Canada.

That would be the best way to do it. You would need to be registered with the provincial training authority , have your docs approved and get a registration # first. Then get an exam date if all you docs are OK and accepted and once you are ready to sit the exam. With any Red Seal endorsed trade, it does not matter where you sit the exam, it is inter-provincial. You could take it in ON and it would be transferable to AB.

To challenge the exam, provable work hours are 1.5 x the hours of the regular apprenticeship requirement. So if an apprentice needs 6000 hours to be a journeyman, you would need 9000 work hours to challenge.

A word of warning! Once you have proved the hours etc and received permission to sit the exam and decide to do it whilst on holiday, you may just get a 3 month work permit issued then and there as the border officer may see it as your sitting the exam so you can work. Of course they may also refuse entry. OH was issued the WP.
