Default Right to work in canada

Hi again all,

Suddenly had a little panic about my right to work in Canada ! Ive been offered a job in vancouver. I was born in ontario 1984 moved to UK with my scottish parents as a child, applied for my first canadian passport but hasn't come through yet. I have my short candian birth cert (sent my long one with my passport application), my job is asking me to send proof of right to work in canada...... am i right in thinking i have the right work in canada ?

Yes as a Canadian citizen you have the right to work providing the company wants to employ you

Send them a copy of the short birth certificate and explain that the long one has been sent off with your Canadian passport application and that when it arrives you can supply them with a copy of the passport bio data page. Politely point out that you would be stupid to tell them that you are a Canadian citizen if you weren't and applying for a job knowing that you might be asked for proof of such.

What FL said is right. You are a Canadian citizen by virtue of being born there (regardless of your parents' nationality). This principle of gaining citizenship because of being born in a country is called Jus soli. This principle does not apply to that many countries, I don't think but it does to Canada and the US.

As you will know, Canadian citizens have the right to live and work anywhere in Canada.
