One of the places we are considering moving to (employment permitting, of course) in Hamilton, in south-west Ontario, about half way between Toronto and Niagara Falls. It's an old steel city with an annoying one-way traffic system, I gather, but I like the look of the houses I have seen on www.mls.ca - and the prices are incredibly low. It certainly looks prettier and more interesting than Brampton, where we'll be in the short term. Not that that'd be difficult!

Right - so should we forget the idea? If so, why? Is there anything particularly wrong with the place?

Cheers.

Thanks for the tip. Why will you not go back to Hamilton?

Probably because the poster won't be able to find their way there again, as they've only been there once

Just gotta say... I've been to hamilton 3 times now, (landed back in london this morning actually!), and am moving there this year God willing.

I love the place. My girlfriend has two homes, one with her student mates right opposite McMaster university, and another with her mother up on the Mountain just off Mohawk and Magnolia. I think this area is beautiful, but then I think downtown hamilton ain't so bad either. I come from Southend, Essex, and believe me, Hamilton is NOTHING compared to Southend. I'd take that mountain anytime over this shithole. Everything is relative. You only truely know if you like a place once you have lived there. You could get mugged anywhere, Toronto is a hell-hole, the pollutionin Hamilton is really not bad at all, and frankly, people are a hell of a lot nicer to a cockney wannabee in hamilton than anywhere else i have been.

Hi Rhodes

It really does bemuse me why ex-pats are so down on Hamilton. It really irks me to tell you the truth.
If I were to believe the replies on this website about Hamilton, I would believe that the city is a slum area.

I get so tired and annoyed by some of the replies on this thread and I am sure some of them are from folk who have never stepped across the 'chosen lands", of Burlington/Oakville/Mississaug/Toronto/ anywhere in Canada except Hamilton to Hamilton.

Yes, people have your opinion, by all means, but for goodness sake make it an informed opinion and a balanced one. It seems to me, some people make ill infomed remarks about a city based on what they perceive and read. What gives them the right to sit at the computer and trash a perfectly decent city, albeit it has its issues, tell me a city that doesn't. There is so much goodness in Hamilton and some very beautiful areas. Yes, better than some in Burlington/Toronto/Brampton etc etc.

You will have guessed by now that I live in Hamilton, and if I am to believe the posts on this website, apparently I live in cheaper house than all of the self serving people who trash a city, and I am placing my children at risk from the multitude of health issues prevalent in Hamilton and no where else in Canada. I am such a bad parent for choosing to live in such a slum area. This blows my mind and how dare you people assume this.

I am for your information, a hard working, child focused, honest, I like to think helpful person with extremely high values and in case you dont get my point someone who loves her kids and takes their health, education, values and standard of living very seriously. I have no intention of offending any particular person, but all of you out there who consistently and repeateadly comment " I would never live there, or bring my children up there, or stop there, god forbid for a coffee", or god forbid raise your family in Hamilton, You are putting your childrens lives at risk, Just stop for a moment and take check of what you are saying.

Sorry, but I have had it with the trashing of HAMILTON.

I don't know why people have such a downer on Hamilton either.
It reminds me of a gritty northern English city like Sheffield or Sunderland.
Personally I'd rather live in a 'proper' city with character like Hamilton than some boring identikit suburb.
Also, it's grossly unfair to judge the place speeding past the steel mills on the QEW! The city itself is actually quite nice with a busy centre, plenty of bars and shops.

I'll be living there from August, and I love the place. My girlfriend actually left Mississauga to go to Hamilton, because the suburbs are incredibly boring. What you see when you drive past is NOT a fair representation of Hamilton. The air is fine, the people are nice, and it pisses on Toronto etc.
