I've been surprised how much preparation time I've been spending on meals compared to before. Apart from Sunday lunches I was really only cooking for one. I'd have expected to have been looking for short cuts or convenience foods in cooking for four.

The benefits of having more time through quitting work early I guess.

Consider a costco membership. You can save a lot although you have to exercise restraint since you tend to get carried away. Also its all bulk purchases, but for the frugal shopper it can save money.

McBride is a tiny, tiny town in the middle of the Rockies... far from practically everywhere.

Does the "fruit truck" not stop regularly in McBride in the summer & autumn months? I love their produce, even if it's not the cheapest, you know it's only come from the Okanagan, rather than flown in from the 'States. And then there's the numerous farmers' markets...they're always good for local organic produce. Again, not cheap (so probably not relevant to this thread) but good value compared to the mark-up that organic stuff usually has in-store...

Hi ville,
Your quote of mine got mangled - try ExtraFoods for what? We did do a bulk shop there once. Now we are mostly using Safeways, and my husband is on a $200 a week budget. He enjoys keeping within it, and I enjoy his cooking

For those of you who shop at Safeway you should also use your Airmiles card. If you don't have one it's worth your while to get one. Go on line to the Safeway website, and sign up for their weekly specials online advice and you will see that they give out huge amounts of Airmiles. Far more than anywhere else. You can soon collect a whole load of them. Check it out.
