When you get here and realise how much things cost you'll turn round and get back on that plane!!! £590 for 900 litres of heating oil, £133 for diesel and the weather is CRAP!!! Good luck anyway

Good luck, Elaine. Belfast is a beautiful place - and I am sure you will be happy there surrounded by family.

If holidays is the only criteria you are working with then perhaps Australia might be better for you.
Two weeks is the government mandated minimum which is in fact similar to the UK, although lots of companies give more.

In the UK, "Under the Working Time Regulations employees with more than thirteen weeks' service are entitled to four weeks' paid leave per year".

I stand corrected.
However I still stand by my original comment that, "If holidays is the only criteria you are working with then perhaps Australia might be better for you."

Hi Steve, I think you have a valid point. However, I am in McGinty's Ontario where jobs are getting scarcer, salaries are under downward pressure, and if you change jobs, you are back to two weeks holiday again (in most cases). Granted, this is a supply and demand situation and one always has the option of moving elsewhere. However, I believe taking holidays is important to your general health and, generally speaking, when it comes to holidays, North America is way behind Europe.

Trying to keep things on track, I just want to wish you the best Elaine, and I hope the kids settle in quick. I know you'll be glad to be back home, and I just want you to know I'll miss you if you don't come back here from time to time. All the very best to you and yours cyber friend!

I work self employed and roughly work 6 months a year,so i have plenty of time of to enjoy myself. My friend is moving to Nova Scotia this month and is getting 5 weeks paid leave with his job right from the start.I imagine most people get into Canada through being skilled workers,so surely a better deal than 2 weeks annual leave is being offered.

You are very fortunate to be able to do that, what do you do? although Im in my first year working for a company rather than self employed, they were adamant from the start that there would be no time off in the first year of employment & after that its limited to two weeks a year, oh but after five years service you get an extra week

Hi Elaine, have been away this weekend and so hadn't seen your post. By the time you eventually get around to reading this you'll be safe and sound back home. Hope the flight was an uneventful one and the children didn't hassle you too much. With very best wishes for the future.
