This forum!

I've just spent some time reading through some of the threads posted here recently and felt that I had to comment - there are some people on this forum that, whenever anyone says they miss something about the UK, they jump down their throats and say things like "Why did you come here then?" and other such nonsense! There is no need for such nastiness and insensitivity on this forum. We're here to help each other through a process of adaptation to a new life.

I'm all for adapting to a new way of life in a new country, but there will always be things that I miss about the UK - Paxo stuffing, Bisto granules, pub grub, rugby, etc - but that doesn't mean I'm not 'making a go of it' here in Canada. Neither does it mean I'm thinking in the past or wishing I was elsewhere.

To all those people who like to shoot others down for their opinions, GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE! Accept that just cos' you've lived here for 10 years or 10 minutes, it does not give you the right to put others down for their opinions or feelings! If you've given up on the UK so much and adopted the Canadian lifestyle, why are you on this forum???? Why keep any contact with British people?

When you've lived somewhere for 20-30 years and move elsewhere, you don't just shut off that portion of your memory and thought processes. Of course as humans we look back - our experiences in the past make us who we are.

So let's just think before we post nasty replies to people that put others down! As I said, we're here to support each other in what for many will be the biggest thing they ever do in life.

Rant over!

Would you like me to send you some?, they have those two in our local supermarkets if you know where to look.

Kind of like finding the Marmite in with the baking stuff as its "yeast" extract :confused: Clearly no idea what its actually for :rolleyes:

Point taken about the rest of it though. Immigration isnt easy for everyone, and people have a right to moan. The trivial stuff shouldnt be a deal breaker if everything else falls into place.

Cos we have some real life experience of living in canada, and are happy to pass that on, rather than leave people at the mercy of the rose tinted crap in "canada news" when making this sort of monumental once a lifetime decision?

Internet forums attract a variety of opinion and comment and some inevitably will grate/upset/annoy. Don't let it get to you. The subject of this forum as it involves such a huge life change attracts extremes of opinion from 'Canada is a utopian paradise' to 'Canada is hell on earth and I moved back to England, phew what a relief.' The reality as we all know is somewhere in between for most of us.

I miss a lot of things about England. Mainly family and friends but also, proper British pubs and proper beer. This may sound trivial to some but its neverthess heartfelt. Does it mean I cant live here happily? No of course not, but they are a couple of things I miss.

And I'm not alone. Mrs AX is a passionate Newfoundlander and loves this place dearly. Its because of her and my own love of the place I'm here too. But even she misses UK at times after living there for 5 years and its not at all beyond the bound of possibilities that we might go back some day as who knows whats going to happen in the long term.

In the meantime we live life for the present. This forum is great as a source of information, companionship (that shared experience thing) and humour. But view it like meeting with a bunch of people in a pub. Not everyone you meet is going to be someone you want to be best friends with.

My several cents,

AX

I think you are proposing a simple answer to a complex question.

I agree in general with what you have said about missing things from home being normal, but I think you also have to acknowledge that some people show an obvious attitude problem and should be told to go home. Deciding who falls in what category is a judgement call that each of us has to make. I don't see how what you have posted here is any different than what you are accusing others of doing Trish.

"To all those people who like to shoot others down for their opinions, GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE!"

Aren't you doing just that?

"So let's just think before we post nasty replies to people that put others down!"

That you haven't made these comments to an individual doesn't change the fact that you are indeed attempting to tell others what they should and should not post.

Haven't I just attempted to tell you what you should and should not post? We all do it all the time. Not judging is extremely hard to do.

Well said Trish!! Last time I was over in Canada I went on my own and missed home terribly, but the mind plays strange tricks. I was missing things about the UK that I don't even particularly like like Tesco, Jamie Oliver on TV and Eastenders which was very confusing. These pangs of 'homesickness' come from nowhere and seemed irrational considering I was only there for a visit. Now, back in the UK, I pine for Canada and can't wait to leave the UK and start out new life out there, but I know full well I can expect to feel homesick again when we do. It would be nice to be able to "discuss" those weird feelings without getting shot down in flames. I think the trouble has sometimes been that when people are confused by how they're feeling, it can sometimes come across as 'Canada-bashing'.

Good point. If the pining becomes apparent to other people then it won't help establishing new friendships, getting a job etc.

That is true if you were to go around saying how much you miss the UK to every Canadian you meet. However, if you come on a BRITISH Expats site to discuss how you feel about missing your home country with fellow Brits who have gone through a similar experience, then it is understandable to hope for sympathy and for others to feel the same way (especially if you reply to a thread asking about what people miss!).

Maybe once you have lived in Canada for 30 years you are more Canadian than you are British in your outlook and don't really understand how today's British immigrants feel. Constantly telling people to change their attitude and stop whining is insensitive and gets on people's nerves after a while.

I don't believe I'm being judgemental or shooting anyone down directly by telling a faction on this forum to lay off people who may be feeling fragile and wish to reminisce about things from the UK that may help them to cope with being in a foreign country.

I was referring to those individuals who immediately shoot folks down for making a simple comment about something they miss from home - if you'd been around on this forum long enough you would know that there have been many people who've held back from posting due to nasty comments made by some and others who haven't come back.

Take it or leave it.

A perfect summary of the situation (in my opinion!). Outside of being abusive everyone is entitled to an opinion be it negative or positive and we are all capable of a little hypocrisy when it suits. We always have the right of reply and the use of the ignore button should we really take a dislike to a particular individual.

I've hardly read any posts for quite some time now and I rarely come on here anymore:

Such a lot of bickering goes on;

such a lot of cr*p is spoken by people who appear to be on a different planet to the rest of us;

such a lack of friendliness;

such a lot of "I know better than you.......even though I still live in the UK and have visited Canada for 20 minutes in the whole of my lifetime";

such a lot of smart-asses who live here and think they know everything about everyone's situation or location;

such a lot of plain nasty people;

such a lot who take every opportunity to put down anyone who disagrees with them;

such a lot of miserable and ignorant gits;

I miss the nice friendly people who are helpful, provide thoughtful reasoning combined with interesting debates - of course this sector of the forum are the majority, but as always, the minority shouts loudest.

I do wonder why some people even bother to come on here anymore. I used to feel that as I was helped so much by some lovely people on here, that it was now my turn to help others as I may have some useful information or experience to pass onto those who are still in the process, or at the start of their life-changing experience, but lately I have no idea what is going on here .......... hence my semi-retirement from this place. I enjoy the PM's some of you guys send me and I love to hear how everyone is getting on, but to be frank, on the occasional visits into this forum, fills me with wonder.

I have a fantastic life here in Canada; I wouldn't change anything for the world, although if anyone wants to donate a REAL Cadbury's Whole Nut and a packet of Dark Chocolate Homewheat then I won't say no! The point is, my real life is so darned good, that coming on here is like reading Nostra Damus!

Anyway, well said Trish - you are right everyone should be entitled to have their say without fear of someone jumping down their throat and telling them what they should feel or what they should eat or how they should lead their lives. Everyone is unique - can't we all just accept that and let those who wish to wallow, enjoy their wallowing; and those who are living on air and excitement, flourish?

Nor would you want to erase those wonderful memories. They are something to pass on to your children, grandchildren, etc.

Although I was born and raised in Canada, my parents were born and raised in Ireland and Poland. We have spent two years discovering our "roots" in the old countries and it was a wonderful joyous experience to understand "where we came from" and Im very proud of what my parents and grandparents accomplished in Canada while never forgetting the country that was home at one time.

We use to watch our videos and such "nostalgic" stuff ;)
...and not to forget Grandma's old-fashioned cake-recipes! You can't buy anything like this anywhere in the world, it's a traditional thingy and I love it!

The only way I can get it is from the British Shop (and I'm not paying those prices) or smuggled in via family and friends.

Kind of like finding the Marmite in with the baking stuff as its "yeast" extract :confused: Clearly no idea what its actually for :rolleyes:

I take you aren't actually in Bragg Creek at the moment then? :)

Yes Marmite is readily available in I would guess virtually every Safeway, Superstore and Co-op in Calgary.

It sure looks like I'm gonna miss the Sunday Times. I saw one today for sale in a Chapters store. Over $10!
