Another idea for your 7 year old might be to take a new bionicle or star wars lego set in a bag or tuppaware to keep him busy. We have smaller kids and found a new pack of plasticine handy to make things quietly. You can get small craft sets like pictures to embroider if they are into that sort of thing.

Avoid any food or drinks that would make them hyper. If you have a Cd walkman you can get some great books on CD too (our library has a good selection).

Hope it goes well for you.

Ah, the memories. We used to take lego and bionicles when our kids were a bit younger and never had any problems on the flight. I would never drug my kids either to take them anywhere. In fact, the thought makes me feel sick

As others have suggested, pack some new little puzzles/games/books/crayons into their own backpack. Giftwrap a few extra little surprises too. Also pack something they can play with mum/dad like cards. It does take some effort on the parents behalf too to keep the little ones occupied. Make sure you do let them get up for an occassional walk up the aisle too.

For any adult that suffers with inflight earache, my doctor recommended I take Sudafed for about 2-3 days beforehand. Works a treat with me. Always read the label!

I had a bad cold brewing for our flight in May. An air hostee friend suggested Sudafed. Oh God it was awful!! It sure did unblock the passages though - I did not feel bunged up and no earache - but my nose was on a constant drip feed to an ever-diminishing supply of tissues!!! OK - too much info - but I pittied the poor lady beside me

Some plain-ish sandwiches, crisps, snacks - mine rarely like what is on offer. If you do sneak fruit on board, eat it all before you land !

And yes, definitely vodka. Wise choice! Enjoy !
I thought with the heightened security fears you couldn't take on anything electronic, maybe a book, and it all had to be in a plastic bag - or am I being all too 12 months ago?

Mind you - this could be moot as my youngest's passport still hasn't arrived so far only 4 weeks late and am failing to be reassured by the help desk at Passport Canada...

Electronic goods are fine, but obviously nothing sharp and no liquids over 100ml. If you are buying drinks get them on the other side of security

You can take game boys etc. I think that you are asked to turn them off on take off and landing on some planes though.

The plastic bag thing is for liquids/lotions etc. Small amounts of liquid (not more than 100ml) in a clear plastic bag. This includes make-up, eye drops, medication etc.

Take it that also includes the vodka then! 100ml won't get me to Canada

We received travel itinerary of Canadian Affair this morning and the outbound flight has changed, now flying at 17.15 so will have an even longer day, and even more time for everyone to get stressed, (by everyone I mean me!).

I am considering the valium option but ONLY for me, I could do with taking some now 3 weeks 4 days to go (not that I'm counting), and I am more excited than the children....

So now the children are safely occupied what about me, what am I going to do on the flight, apart from panic about crashing?????

OH suggested Mile High Club, dream on babe
