Flying with children
#16
Hi,
I am after some advice on how to keep children content on a flight to Canada, we are flying from Manchester to Toronto, so flight is 7-8 hours.
Children are 7,9 and 11.
Have already thought of the obvious, puzzle books, books, pens and paper... Can they take Gameboy micro?
What else could we take, I want a quiet time... yeah right...
I thought I might take earplugs and vodka!!!!!!!!

What about a huge gobstopper - that would keep them quiet lol

Last year we flew twice in the span of three months and our flight was 9 hours with a 4 year old boy and 6 year old girl.
The 4 year old was so excited to be on a plane that he wore himself out good and proper and slept for 4 hours of it, the 6 year old had her nose stuck in the gameboy and was content until the batterys wore out. They did both get a kids pack which actually kept them entertained for a bit.
Mind you I take my hat of to our girl by the time we finally got to bed we worked out she had been awake 26 hours and still complained when she did finally go!!
I really dont recommend drugging your kids you never know in an emergency and all!!

I don't think drugging the kids is a good idea either. As others have said taking plenty of stuff to entertain them is the better idea. we also take a portable DVD player (with headsets) for our 4 year old with his favourite movies we have a spare battery for it so it lasts about 4hours. He very rarely lasts that long normally asleep within 1hr. Having said that the last time we flew he was awake for virtually the whole flight and he played with his cars the whole way there.

We have flown twice this year.
Once into pearson and the other into hamilton.
Our kids are 9,5 and 2
Took there ds lites, colours, teddys, there own snuggle blanket (youngest)
They all carry there own travel bag, full of goodies
Chewits for when they are taking off and landing
and we had no problems with all 3, got to say some kids went on the plane with no bag etc etc and insisted on running up and down the airplane.
Ours was brilliant, totally excited on way out and totally tired out on way back.
good luck who are you flying with??

My little one is 7 now and I still pack his on board bag for him and fill it with loads of surprises which can be dished out according to mother's need
I bought a few new books, cars and gadgets from the cheapie bookstore and it kept him entertained (along with cereal bars and sweeties).
We also had the GameBoy as he got older but when he was young, the surprises seemed to work best.
We all get trouble with our ears when flying so I took along some decongestant and Calpol. I appreciate what everyone says about drugging but at the same time, when he was very small and didn't understand the pain - I had no trouble dishing out a sachet of Calpol.
Have a good flight!

There is a real difference between Calpol and valium. I agree with the calpol, although fruit shoot or other type of bottle drink on way up and down works well (buy them after security checks)

I got a PSP for my boy, loaded up some of his favourite DVD's to memory stick, plus got some UMD movies - he was as quiet as a mouse for the whole flight. He did sleep for about 3 hours though. We also had a bag of goodies (colouring stuff etc) for him as well.

Hi all,
Wow, what a lot of suggestions some brilliant!!!
We have already booked seats flying with Canadian Affair, Thomas Cook on way out Boeing 757, Air Transat on the way back Airbus A310....
Unfortunately all our seat are together, well 3 in one row and 2 behind, the vodka and earplugs is for me! Not sure if I feel comfortable drugging children
, thought we were supposed to discourage drugs! As far as inconveniencing other passengers goes, well I guess thats tough, we have paid for our tickets, want to get your own back have some yourself!!
I have to admit that ours are not brats, and I do not expect them to misbehave, just get bored.
Gobstoppers?? Even the most enormous one in the entire world will not shut our 7 year old boy up! To make matters worse first time they have all flown, so the word hyper is probably the biggest understatement in the world.
Staying near Beeton, Ontario, hoping to move to Wasaga beach/Barrie or somewhere in Ontario next Autumn.
Thanks for all your replies, will print off and make sure I study!
Hi steve, all ready for the big move??? Shame your not going to be there when we are, but hope to catch up soon!
Hi WDW,
How are things for you at the moment all calmed down after court??

I have to say that i really thought the gobstoppers was a good idea, but i can see yr point - as we tried one with Suzi some time ago - it was huge but she still managed to talk!!
With regard to court, yep things calmed down lots now. We were a bit surprised when the order arrived it was hand written and did not look anything like we had thought it would, but never mind.
My mum has been quite unwell for a few days now and that has really upset me a lot, she is having blackouts ( she has had lots and they don't know why ) she looses her memory after them but it always comes back in a hour or so, sadly this time it has not and we are 3 days forward and still in big difficulty with her memory. My poor dad is worried sick and we are all so sad about it. I know most people think their parents are lovley, but my mum has a heart of gold and its just so unfair.
Anyhow, still waiting for dates for Canada , still need to sell the Catering Unit and the other house!! got any ideas?????
Hope to talk soon
Take care, Dawn x

Try and pick an airline with in-seat screens... you know, TV and films on demand and about 200 games! I think BA have them to Canada.... Air Canada don't. KLM might, Air France should. They are an absolute godsend with kids.

Frankly I dont give a shit about other passengers "comfort" level. I'm not giving my kid a narcotic to make other people (presumably people without kids) feel more comfortable

First time we flew with young son, we gave him a dose of Calpol just before we boarded the plane, following recommendations from friends. I think I posted on here a while ago in a similar thread that he fell asleep before takeoff and was calm and quiet for the whole flight (London-Montreal) - we thought as a result of the Calpol. We've since flown a few more times, and been on long road-trips too, without resorting to medication, and I don't think I'd dose him or daughter again before flying.
We'd like to think they're well enough behaved not to annoy other people anyway, but even if they did have a tantrum, it's no worse or more annoying than the behaviour of many adults on board.

You can safely give your kids some valium:

I wish more people would do this on flights. Or at least establish a child-free zone of the plane.

On the other hand you could always drug yourself, that way other passengers don't need to be bothered by you.
