Once you receive your notice of assessment for 2014.

So I know I'm being daft, but you CANT netfile your first ever return right?

I have filled in my first return using studio tax, I have done a combined return with my wife, who hasn't worked since coming to Canada. I'm here from September. On reading the gov tax help webpage, my understanding is that I only include earnings since I became a canadian resident and studio tax reckons I will get most but not all of the tax I paid back. Does this sound right?

Did you fill in the date you became tax resident in 2014 correctly?

Well I arrived in Canada on September 5th, started work September 22nd. I put down Sept 5th as the date I became resident. Perhaps should have been 22nd as that would be the date that I had "significant ties"?

I haven't sent in the application yet as I'm nervous about getting it right lol

Yes.

When you Netfile the CRA's system does some basic verification tests. E.g. does you name and SIN match, is your date of birth correct? If it can't match these details then it rejects the filing. Most new immigrants are not in the system so have to file their first return on paper. It is possible that someone has had prior dealings with the CRA and they may be able to Netfile, but it is unlikely.

Yes, it is not unusual to get a refund on your first return.

September 5th is the right date.
