Iain, if you are addressing that comment to me, can I point out that I had no criticism of Canada's immigration policy, language or anything else, and have been here many years so don't need to research.

Now back to your original post, I am truly sorry about your Mum, and can understand so well because the identical situation happened to me a few years ago. Hospital said stop worrying, no need to come back. Gut feeling had me booking a flight. She died before I left Vancouver. Horrible. We always say we are only a 9 hour flight away in an emergency, but in reality it doesn't work like that. Something that our would-be immigrants need to think about with ailing or aging parents.

Perhaps this thread could be allowed to move on now (or die peacefully in its sleep, like my mother)? If you want to discuss racism / freedom of speech and the relative merits of segregation in canada / the uk, then with respect perhaps its time to start your own thread?

Sorry for being one of the hijackers, and sorry to hear about your mum.
This could be our sitauation at any time as my mum has not had good health for a good few years. She insists we go through with it though.
