Excess baggage
#16
OMG I got a quote from Thomas Cook cargo today.
They charge a minimum of £80 or £1.25/kg (not 100% certain of that price as quote at work...)
Then they charge a fuel surcharge and then they charge £130 handling charge!!!!
So it is a minimum of £210 + fuel charge!!!
Hmm, is it worth it?

Hi DandNHill
Can you give more details on exactly what you sent
from where and to where?
and how much it cost?
Just want to get general idea.

Eventually I used Transglobal Express. http://www.transglobalexpress.co.uk/ They were really cheap although the bags did get held up in customs and took 3 weeks rather than the 3 days or so they quoted.

There were 2 bags, a holdall measuring around 100cm and a suitcase about 60cm (I think. Put it this way, the holdall was very large and the suitcase was too large for cabin size).
The total weight was circa 90kgs and they charged me £60.
My sons' girlfriend sent a suitcase the same way, no idea how much she paid, but hers only took 4 days with Transglobal Express. Suppose it's the luck of the draw if anything gets "stuck" in customs...
Hope that helps

Thanks
Thats a pretty good price
Is the costs mroe to do with the size than the weight you think?
I got a quote off excessbaggage to send a large suitcase and that was something like £180 - however it said nothing of weight limit?

Hi, well it was from the South East to just outside Halifax. Apparently it went via Toronto!!

Well I played around with sizes and the price didn't vary too much, it seemed to be more the weight.

Just tried a few quotes and they are working out more expensive than others I have checked
Did you choose door to door or air option? sounds like a silly question but just wanted to double check.

Hi, i'm looking to send a couple of tool boxes that will arrive the same time as my OH and have been looking at Fedex economical and DHL. Haven't made a decision yet though as I'm not sure of the customs clearance as arriving with PR for the first time and no address yet! Maybe worth you checking for your towels etc? HTH brookel

Thanks Brookel
Will have a look at them, although have avoided looking at the big companies as i am sure they will overcharge just because of repuation.
No harm in checking, and good luck with your move.

thanks BobbyN, just thought I'd update you my new findings...going through FedEx directly is a lot more £ than if going through 'interparcel' or 'parcels2go'. Just discovered that Parcels2go won't send personal effects but interparcel will ?? (both using Fed ex) My quote from interparcel was £90.22 for 2 boxes, each weighing 20kg, and both 70cm Long, 35cm Heigh, 30cm Wide. f(ed ex economy and will apparently take 2-5 eorking days.) Thats a decent quote and I am estimating at the moment about 50kg of stuff to be sent either ahead of me leaving or after.
What kind of boxes were you sending? just normal cardboard types or did you have to purchase specific containers?
I am possibly going to just send a very large suitcase and get as much in it as possible.

we'll be sending two tool boxes which hopefully i'll just be able to wrap? not too sure i'll just be able to do that tho. I've looked further into the interparcel quote and it seems to me that we might not be able to insure sending them through interparcel. (All parcels must be boxed or jiffy bagged according to interparcel website) Good luck,
