Examples of salaries
#1
The question of salaries comes up frequently, and I though it might be useful to illustrate the range available where I work (a BC university).
Support staff (CUPE unionised positions):
Job titles include Filing Clerk, Finance Clerk, Assistant Groundskeeper, Receptionist, Marketing Coordinator, Program Administrator, Events Coordinator, Graphic Design Assistant and Database Administrator. They’re mostly entry level type positions, with no management or budgetary responsibility.
Pay rates for these sorts of jobs range from c$12 p/hr up towards $28 p/hr. Benefits include 100% employer paid premiums for extended health, 3x salary for life cover (with option for additional cover), short and long term disability cover, unlimited 100% dental cover (employer paid premium), and a defined benefit pension (7.95% employee and 7.95% employer contribution rates). I believe jobs at this level are entitled to 4 weeks paid holiday.
Administrative staff (Assoc. of Professional Administrators union):
Broad job titles include Associate Director, Director, Manager, Executive Assistant VP, Officer and Consultant.
Pay rates for these roles are spread across 9 bands, rising from $38,100 p/yr to $42,200 (eg Human Resources Officer), to $47,500 (eg Assistant, Office of the President), to $51,400 (eg Executive Assistant VP Academic), to $56,600 (eg Manager, Payroll), to $62,800 (eg Manager IT Client Services), to $75,150 (eg Director, or Associate Director), to $89,500 (eg Director) and finally $103,900.
Benefits are broadly similar, with the addition of 2 weeks extra holiday entitlement. Working hours are 8-4 for all staff.
All the positions here require distinct levels of qualification (from a high school diploma, to 1yr or 2yr college diploma, degree, masters or doctorate). Unfortunately, without them you can't hope to gain an interview.
