Re: Everybody's elses mum........
My old mum would have made Genghis Kahn seem like a Baptist minister.
As young chidren we were expected to contribute to the family budget. Just a small example= "Billy you have to be up early for your paper round(I was 8 or 9yrs old) I will call you at 0530" 0530 arrives "Billy get up" no reaction 0540 "Billy get up" no reaction 0545 Mum pulls bed clothes back, cup of cold water thrown over sleeping Billy. Next morning "Get up Billy its 0530" Three guesses who got up straight away? The old girl took no prisoners. She passed away last year at 89yrs old, and I loved her every minute of her life. PS-our designer gear was ex-army surplus from Millets-I went to school in army boots /army battledress top/ and cut down army trousers(as did most of my mates) it was warm--not quite Nike or Asidas but it worked. |

Being young, you just want to spend, and have fun. So, understandable. Now they are both working full time, running their own cars and learning just how expensive that is.

Oh my!! I have the same 'LOOK' with our children and I've perfected it so it even works on my hubby!! lol!!!!!!! Cheers Kelly |

Believe me this is nowhere near the high end of dress shops in Toronto, it's just a high street dress shop, and, really, shopping in Toronto is no one's idea of big spending. Several of my daughter's contemporaries regularly shopped in Paris, I imagine all the students at Branksome and the like import their clothes. Although valid for him, it really doesn't help the rest of us when he portrays this as the norm for everyone. In regards to grad dresses there is an article in today's Calgary Herald that I would guess is much closer to the world most of us are familiar with rather than the one dbd33 lives in. Three young graduates purchasing their dresses for $200, approx $322 Cdn (dress purchased in Hawaii) and $175. A far cry from the $2,500 quoted by dbd33. |

There's a fun show on MTV, My Super Sweet Sixteen, which deals with such issues as what type of car one should buy one's daughter for her birthday, what sort of dress is needed and so on. The people on the that show are affluent, kids around here aren't but, if they wear $200 prom dresses, it's as an ironic statement. No one seriously wears a prom dress that cost less than her shoes. |

You can't exactly factor in the cost of a trip that was part of a family vacation. It not like she decided to go to Hawaii to specifically shop for a grad dress. |
