We came up with a great plan though - when they turned about 12/13 instead of buying all their clothes for them, we gave them a large monthly allowance. They had to learn to 'budget'; because out of that allowance, they had to save, buy their own school supplies, clothes, entertainment, and even gifts for birthdays and Christmas etc. Bacically everything except food, shelter, and household related stuff; which we covered. That way - you know exactly what you're paying out each month - they get an introduction to the grown up world of money management, and you never have to have those conflicts again! If they want a $100 shirt, they can have it (if they've figured out how to budget ;)) |

Good For You I was the same way with my kids who are now 19, 23 and 26 and they all turned out to be good kids they had curfews, jobs and god help them if they skipped school and got caught my son(the 26 year old) still remembers me going to school with him to ensure he was attending all of his classes in grade 11 when he got caught...lol Kids do have the same demands here in Canada of their parents but the best thing for them is for Parents to learn and mean the word "NO" Island Girl |

I find many more parents here in Canada let the kids stay at home for year past when they should. Seems really strange to me since in the US, especially the south where I am from, they kick the kids out when they finish school. I would consider still living with my parents after age 20 (maybe later if still in university) to be a massive failure. |
Re: Everybodys elses mum........
I don't know where the person lives who says that prom dresses - in Regina they are called Grad dresses - cost $2,500. I can absolutely assure you that here they do not cost that kind of money. My girlfriend is getting a grad dress made for her granddaughter (she doesn't have any parents alive incidentally) by a professional dressmaker and its costing her $150 plus the material, which is satin and does not cost $2,350!!
I cannot imagine anybody, even the yuppiest parents around, paying $2,500 for a grad dress, specially not a Grade 12 grad and so far as I can remember, girls did not have a university graduation dress. My son and his wife and everybody else wore those black gowns and the gowns did not even belong to them. I can't remember if they walked on the stage and got their diploma and then gave the gown to someone else, or if they rented them from somewhere. I suppose maybe in Beverley Hills they might pay $2,500 for a grad dress, but certainly not around here. My granddaughter is going to be 13 in July. She asked me if I could find some Airwalk runners and some other kind of runners, on eBay. She likes clothes but she never asks for particularly expensive stuff. I bought her clothes for Easter from places called Garage and Blue Notes. I think she got two pairs of jeans, a bikini, some capris and a couple of tops and it cost me $140. However, she did tell me a while ago when we were discussing her playing soccer, that "nobody else's parents" forced them to play a sport. I said - well that is because your friends volunteer to play sports and so their parents don't have to force them! Soccer starts next week and she is playing! |

This shop is on the block here : http://karenkellydesigns.ca/bio.htm it says on the website that dresses start at $800 but, peering in the window, I never see anything anywhere near that cheap. It's a popular spot for picking up high school prom dresses and the sort of gown one needs each month if one attends Trinity or similar. Believe me this is nowhere near the high end of dress shops in Toronto, it's just a high street dress shop, and, really, shopping in Toronto is no one's idea of big spending. Several of my daughter's contemporaries regularly shopped in Paris, I imagine all the students at Branksome and the like import their clothes. |
