Engineer Positions In Calgary - Am I suitable?
I am enquiring about Engineer positions in Calgary. Would anyone be able to tell me if with my experience and qualifications I would be allegeable to apply for and be considered for Engineer positions?
Trade time served 4 year multi-skilled (Mechanical / Electrical) apprenticeship
Qualified Electrician (17th Edition)
Various NVQ’s Level 2 & 3
ONC Electrical Engineering
HNC Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
Currently studying towards a B Eng degree
Incorporated Engineer (I Eng) professionally registered with the Engineering Council of UK
Member of the IET (Institution of Engineering & Technology) & PMI (Project Management Institute)
12 years industry experience, currently an Engineering manager have a large team of engineers reporting to me, as well as technical responsibilities I have budgetary & commercial.
I have good project management experience and will be backing up this practical experience in the new year when I take a PMI PMP course.
Any and all comments of what type of positions I would be eligible for would be hugely appreciated
Thanks

Have you considered looking for a job with a UK company who have offices in Canada. My Hubby moved from nuclear to oil, and the company he works with have offices in Canada and are happy to do an inter-company transfer over for him.
I am sure there will be other companies who do this, we are in Aberdeen, Scotland.

If you are looking at alberta to be pre-approved with the AAIT helps
Also employers like to see you coming over on a recci so that they can meet you face to face, would you give a guy a job from his resume
If you are looking at other areas then there is systems in place to get pre-approved
Hubby was a manager in the uk, had to step down to get a job, but hell be back there, just will take time again
hope that helps

Thanks for all the replies, keep them coming!

So it will only be fairly senior personnel or people with specialised knowledge that nobody else in Canada has that can do it that way. The vast majority of people can't transfer to Canada on an intra-company TWP as they just don't qualify - plus of course they have to work for the company in the UK for at least a year first. Just wanted to point that out to anybody reading that thought it might be an quicker and/or easier route!

Not necessarily, remember that there are only 3 categories for a TWP via an intra-company transfer - 'Executive', 'Senior Manager' and 'Specialised Knowledge'.

Specialised knowledge is a massive loop hole though. There handing out TWP's to people with 2 years engineering experience based on specialised knowledge right now. Its very easy to argue that an employee has specialised knowledge on the basis that they have experience of the systems the company use.

And just because they've happily handed out TWP's in the past doesn't mean they always will in the future, the immigration lawyers we've spoken to have all said that 'specialist knowledge' application are the most heavily scrutinised and that proof is definitely required.
We've been told that the most important part of the 'specialist knowledge' criteria is the bit that says the applicant 'has been utilized as a key employee abroad in significant assignments which have enhanced the employer's productivity, competitiveness, image or financial position' - they apparently require proof that the applicant has been sent abroad to represent the company. In our case that means we need to provide copies of conference programs that my husband has spoken at, flight details for meetings, etc. My husband qualifies under all three categories so we're providing proof of each one to make sure it all goes through!
Anyway, I'm sure a lot of people can get round the 'specialist knowledge' bit if they've got a good lawyer, but it's still not a route everyone can go down.

Only if they have experience of the systems where Canadians don't though! I'm sure 'specialist knowledge' covers a big area but just wanted to point out that it may be not be as easy as you implied for most people.

I understand that its not a route everyone can go down but if you work for a global company its most likely your quickest route to obtaining employment abroad - be that in Canada or elsewhere.
