electricals
#1
i am currently considering my strategy for moving our stuff to BC....
i appreciate that canada has a different electrical system, but i do have a multitude of adaptors.
also, considering the apparent cost of goods out there, such as TVs, DVD players, Xboxs, CD players, laptops etc..... it may not be true that it is more cost efficient to save on shipping fees, by selling here and buying new out there. (this is especially true as we barely have anything anyway)
and so the basic question:- is it worth sticking with the old UK items we already have? or are such things really not compatible with things out there?
many thanks

Some work some don't...........
TV's don't bother unless its a dual voltage one that you can switch to NTSC as well
I bought kitchen items like food processors and the like and they work but at such slow speeds as to make them useless
Brought an Epsom printer/scanner that doesn't work at all
The electrical items that do work are a hairdryer and a baby monitor

Electronics are much cheaper in North America, the shipping will kill your pocket. You're basically looking at 40-30% cheaper prices after tax. Look at Futureshop.ca and BestBuy.ca for pricing. major electronic chains like currys and pcworld.
small shops will have better pricing for PC parts etc. I was going to mail my computer to UK when I saw how expesive they were in the UK but the shipping was the killer. I ended up getting a laptop in Canada before I left and saved about 200 quid if I was to buy it in uk.

brought the lot......made it all work
depends if you know what your doing!
If your not sure don't bring it,
the risk of screwing up is far worse than what you'd save
I'd use the search function and read the wiki, this is a well discussed subject with a lot of opinions and some facts

clearly i wouldn't know how to force my toys etc to work on foreign voltage; i couldn't even find this forum's search function!
knowing of my intent to migrate, i have been making do with ancient home appliances for ages and so their actual worth now is negligible anyways.
looking at stores in Vancouver a few weeks back, it didn't seem like 'sale of the century' was taking place; inclusive of futreshop and bestbuys. i should probably take a closer look.
oh and the observation that UK stuff runs super slow out there, sure holds true for rechargable items too like MP3 players and walkie talkies; charge for ever, work for never!
thanks much to all
mega thanks iain - i should've known there'd be a wiki article!
