Im currently a housewife with an 8 month old child, my parter has a small business in advertising, but has booked onto a 4 day intensive tiling course with the idea of starting up his own business, as we were told the 1st thing to do would be to get a trade, i have previously worked in hotels, but have a job in the pipeline to work in a childrens home, would these jobs be of use to canadian employers? Could any one give any advice as to what we could do to have a succesfull application? Would it be better to apply for a temp working visa?

There are some great PNP schemes for small businesses. Maybe the history of his business would help you comply. good luck.

Having a trade may help - but to work in Canada in many of them he'd first have to get something called the Red Seal. And for that he may have to prove he has a certain number of hours of experience (i.e. for an electrician it's 9000 hours, which cannot include any apprenticeships). Plus he'd need to get a job offer first as a tiler, which could be tricky given the current economic situation and the amount of Canadians out of work. So if he decides to go that route then be prepared for a long, long wait before you can even apply!
And having a trade as you've described (i.e. tiling) is not really much use, he'd still have to go via a Temp Work Permit with a job offer. He wouldn't be considered a Skilled Worker, so it doesn't give you an easy route in that way.
I think that what you need to do is start reading the Wiki (on blue bar at top of page) so that you can understand the various visa routes available to you. Then come back and ask specific questions about the route you are hoping to take.
Whereabouts in Canada were you hoping to aim for?

P.S. Have just seen you've also posted in the Oz forum, so thought this Wiki article may be of particular use............http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Canada_versus_Australia
