Really, what do you think their role is? They are there to serve the needs of Brits abroad.
I just checked and here is what the Brits say on their website
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Most British Citizen passport holders do not need a visa to visit the US for pleasure, on certain types of business, or in transit if they intend to stay in the US for less than 90 days and as long as they have a Machine Readable Passport. This is called the Visa Waiver Programme, and more information on this is available on the US Embassy website (details at the end of this section). The requirement to have a machine readable passport was introduced on 26 October 2004.
If you are unsure whether you are eligible to travel to the USA without a visa, the following Questions and Answers may be helpful.

Hi there,
If I'm staying in Canada as a tourist for around 3 months, can I enter the USA (obviously for less than 90 days) as many times as I wish? I guess I'll have to show my return ticket for the trip to USA and perhaps also the return ticket from Canada?
Also, if while in Canada with a return ticket for 3 months I decide to extend my stay for longer (I presume I can buy one way ticket from Canada to UK within Canada
), should I inform anybody? I've heard that you can stay up to 6 monts as a tourist, but if you told the customs official that you wanted to stay 3 months and later change your mind, will you have to tell anybody?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

If you get a date stamped in your passport, then you must leave by that date. Otherwise, if no date, you're admitted for 6mths and can stay until then.
