I passed my driving test last night. Yippee.
As for the rules around uncontrolled intersections - well, it actually happened on my test and, because I've been trying so hard to figure it out, I did actually stop for the car to come out. The examiner was impressed... The other driver looked totally puzzled!!
After the test, I asked the examiner to explain the rules for me a little clearer. Apparently, cars leaving alleys, parking lots etc you do not have to yield to. If a car is leaving a road and the junction is uncontrolled, you should yield. This will typically only happen in residential areas, where you should be driving slowly anyway, expecting children to come out of roads on their bikes etc.
There is a much greater focus on child safety in residential areas here. Having two small children myself, I think this attitude is very good. I remember reading in the book about looking under cars to see if you can see childrens feet. You need really good vision!
