Default Driving licence

Does any one know if the eye sight test for driving licence in Canada include colour blindness, if it does, and a person is deemed so,does this prevent a person getting a licence, as people in UK can get licence with this issue

Hi

Which province are you going to as afew have reciprocal agreements with uk so you can(for a small fee) exchange your Uk one for a Canadian one without having to take another test. Then depending on which province you can search to see what their requirements are.

Probably Alberta. I have ascertained that it is probable to exchange in Alberta, however an individual still needs to undergo an eye sight test and I was told they test for colour blindness as well, I was just curious as to the stringency of these tests I can understand you cannot drive if you have very poor eye sight, I was just curious about the colour blindness. It may be this is not the case I was just trying to find out. I have looked on the net to see if I can find anything out but all I can find is the fact an eye sight test is required.

How do you manage at traffic lights ... just wondered, as colour blindness generally affects red/green recognition more than any other ...

there are different degrees of impairment, blood is red grass is green, distinct colours are no problem whatsoever, whenever subtle multi patterned colours are presented things may not appear obvious, however this does not describe colours used in everyday life, such as traffic lights. It is the subtleties and mixtures, not common differences and contrasting colours that can be an issue

Yes, I know about the various differences ... being involved in electronics, I have come across a few people who had difficulties recognising wire colours, etc.

You are obviously one of the luckier ones who are not so badly affected ..

I exchanged my licence three weeks ago, no test taken, no question of colour blindness, just a cheeky charge ($70 each as I remember).

That's why the lights are in the same order everywhere - red on top, green on bottom. You can still see them light up, even if you can't see the color itself.

To the original question: Here in Ontario they check your vision and your peripheral vision - no test for being colorblind.
