I now know that my house isnt going to make the next addition of "House and Home," due to the server case of popcorn-itis on the ceilings.............. but just so I know for future decorating purposes, is flat plain and maybe a little glossy the way to go?

Plain and flat (maybe a coloured border if it's to your liking), yes :) Glossy, definitely noooooooo. (IMO anyway  ).

Still working on removing ours; the worst yet to come at 16 feet (I don't do heights). Wondering whether to keep or remove the knock down spantex bits - even that's looking a bit dated to me now.

Oh no - it would show up every little imperfection as the light reflected off it. If you have an absolutely perfectly flat surface, it would look great; but the chances of that are pretty much zero.

(or were you after an 'easy clean' surface? ..lol)

That's why they went with the popcorn crap to begin with was it was an easy and cheap way to hide the imperfections. :D:D

Ours doesn't bother me, but then again I don't go around staring at the ceiling.:p

I agree with Calgal. I took some off my bathroom ceiling. The builder doing the bathroom reno told me to get a spray bottle and spray the ceiling. In Regina what we have on the ceiling is called Spraytex, because they spray it on. After I sprayed the ceiling I got a wide putty knife and the stuff just literally fell off the ceiling as I pushed the putty knife along.

I have been told by people who should know that the reason spraytex is put on ceilings is, as someone mentioned, it hides a multitude of sins. We have one ceiling without spraytex and when you stand at one end - you can see kind of lines in the ceiling where the drywall meets. I have been told that it's really, really hard to hide these lines on a ceiling. I was also told that it's for sound proofing.

I have it all over my house. I would rather have spraytex than wonky ceilings.
