I have a bit of a unique situation and I am wondering what I should do.
I have my PR, I am married to a Canadian and my 3 month old daughter whilst born in the UK moved across at a month old and is in the process of gaining her Citizenship.
Although I have my PR at the 11th hour I managed to secure a transfer with the UK defence dept to Calgary. Lucky for me, whilst I am on exchange all my families medical bills etc are met by the Uk Consulate, I obvouisly pay UK tax during this stay exchange. When my transfer ends in Aug 2011, I plan to leave the MOD and stay in Canada, this was our plan all along, its just been slightly adjusted for the better.
I am going to visit the Canada agencies shortly to verify my entry status and hopefully confirm that my PR clock is ticking effectively, what though do I gain or not gain by not having a SIN number etc.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you are a PR living in Canada then I would have thought that you normally should have a SIN.
It will make gaining credit easier, etc.
I doubt there is any clause in the Social Security Agreement to prevent this, but you ought to check.

As you are effectively on the UK payrol at present (If I understand right?) so far you have not needed a canadian SIN...you are paying UK taxes by the sound of it.
Once you leave that sheltered world, you will need a canadian SIN in order for canadian employers to pay you correctly. I would apply for it now, some employers want it as sort of proof of your canadian residency status when you start working for them. Do you have provincial health insurance yet? If not then apply for that too.

Do you need additional security clearance as a canadian citizen to work for the UK defence department?
Just curious as another poster was asking about delaying his spousal app because he's still in the British Army - and as far as I know that's what most people married to Canadians have to do...
Not trying to catch you out, genuinely curious?
No idea on the SIN/ Canadian viewpoint, I'm just curious about the UK legalities side...
