My daughters now 2 and we've done transatlantic flights too many times!! Yes, she was jetlagged but she recovered quickly. I just let her sleep when she needed to. She always travels in her carseat which she is used to(though I don't think you can use British carseat). If you travel at her sleep time she'll probably sleep, though not as well as she would in her own bed. I have used (though only twice) Benadryl (Diphenhydramine HCl) and it did make her more restful. If you decide to use medication make sure you try it at home first in case it has the opposite effect.

Keep lots of her favorite snack foods and drinks on hand. Also I buy a few small toys to give en route when she starts to get restless.

Then hope that the people around you are tolerant and ignore those that aren't. Our little one hasn't really been a problem, but when we travelled in first class(courtesy MOH's employer) the looks we got!!! She behaved impeccably and 2 people made a point of coming over and telling us how wonderful she was.

Expect a couple of days of funny sleep (and eating) patterns, and gently ease her into a more normal pattern if needed but she'll probably sort herself. out. She'll probably be back to normal faster than you.

You should also do what you can to make sure she has a good cry before hand, she'll be destressed and will probably enjoy the flight! My daughter loved the airplane, but fell asleep pretty quickly! Some small toys for when she woke up and it was fine.

I wouldn't ever give chemicals though.
