As I said in my post earlier, DirectBuy is not for everyone. Costco would have never said me $1.5k on the latest LED TV. Performance v/s Price, you can get both if you are a new home owner.

They have the ipod touch at Costco (I'm not sure what it is but I went by a pile of them a month ago). I'm intrigued by
"Your use of a TV is not the same as someone else's." I look at it. It has moving pictures. What do other people do with it? They are connected to the net and give you access to widgets (weather, news etc...) They have USB ports so you can plug your thumb drives and watch movies, view photos, listen to MP3. No need for DVD players anymore. They are LED lit, much brighter lighting and have deeper blacks than old models. They are 2inch thick, light enough to hang on the wall. The are better for gaming due to the reduction in gaming response lag. Obviously, you don't need all this but lots of other people do. www.avsforum.com could give you some education if you think all TVs are the same |

Saving $1,500 at the cost of spending $5,000 doesn't sound compelling.
Also the membership fee is $2,000 not $5,000 |

DirectBuy doesn't stock the items, they are middlemen who place the order for you to the manufacturers. When the item is shipped, it goes to DirectBuy who then calls you to arrange pickup/delivery. For house paint, I saved 40%. This works by going to the affiliated retail store itself and show your DB card. They discount it at check out. |

It came, of course, from Costco though I only went there to get some tyres and baguettes and it somehow fell in the basket.

Hey! You have the same problem in Costco as we do, you go in for some triangle rolls @ $4.99 and you come out with something totally different and your bill sky rockets, never manage to spend less than $200 in there.

Re: Direct Buy
After all of the negative publicity, especially the CBC Marketplace report I would not give it a second look. If they have to try and force you to join with threats of never being invited again then its not for me. With judicious purchasing there are some good deals to be had at specialty stores, who also handle the warranty issues, rather than with Direct Buy you have to send the item back to the manufacturer.
In Canada it is a rare thing to buy at the stores regular price, sales come and go every week. Personally I prefer specialty stores and ones that are relatively local. Also use Costco a lot and have never had a return problem with them. Like other, go in to spend $100 and come out spending $500! Still if you get buyers remorse you can always take it back. |

Yep, go in for diapers, come out with $200 of 'essentials' |
Re: Direct Buy
we joined in 2007 but that was because we built our own house. Membership was $5000 but lasts a couple of years and then $100 or so annually to renew. You can get stuff for friends and family but you have to pay upfront for them they are not even allowed in showroom. Obviously there is no HP on items and everything must be credit/cheque paid. Absolutely No Returns, if you don't go over the purchase order and spot a mistake its your loss. Hence we now have an electric tumble dryer instead of gas!
We saved about 25,000 after the $5,000 membership but we bought just about everything there. Wood flooring, furniture for bedrooms, dining room, taps, sinks, all electrical goods (TV's, washer/dryer, freezers, fridges, microwaves) and only worth doing if your building or a complete re-model and one of your isn't working so you can waste days of your life going through the books and ordering stuff with no help! You then have to factor in the price you see will then have add ons etc., shipping, customs (sometimes), exchange rates etc., and you have to pick up stuff within 7 days from the warehouse or they start charging for it. Not happy memories, completely useless staff, incompetent and unhelpful but all in all we saved $25,000!!! |

A speciality store would sell you the TV at RRP. DirectBuy will sell it to you at cost price + maybe a small profit (I believe they get commission with the manufacturers).
