Mind you, apparently way back when, I assume I was in Canada but I can't remember it - we voted in favour of having it this ridiculous way for some stupid reason.
I wish we could vote it back again because this system is a pain in the you know what!

We never to my knowledge ever voted on any part of the PST or GST.
PST if you live in a province that has it has been around a long time. I believe it was imposed by the government in power at the time.
GST was imposed on us by the Mulroney government we had no say in the matter. The Cretien liberals ran on a platform of repealing the GST but as you can see they reneged on that promise and it's stilll around.
GST was supposed to replace a hidden tax (if I remember correctly it was the Manufacturers Tax) so we would know what we were paying in taxes. However most of us don't want to know and would rather the tax have been included in the price.

Not sure this helps with the Digital Camera but we have found the memory cards are much cheaper in the US and Canada. I bought a 1Gb card for $80 at Costco. They also sell them at Sams World (or whatever its called... it's Walmarts version of CostCo)...
Hope this helps...
