The only thing that would be any different is if you bought an A/C adapter to power it but you buy those separately anyway. Still cameras store the pictures usually as jpgs unless you get a really expensive one that stored them uncompressed as well. Picture file formats aren't country specific. It's only a problem if you buy a video camera because then you have the PAL / NTSC issue.

With the exchange rate being so bad, it is cheaper to buy one here, try http://www.ebuyer.co.uk or http://www.pixmania.co.uk

I lost my digital in Canada so I had to buy one there. I bought a Canon powershot A510 for $299.00 if that helps at all?

It is dual format too NTSC/PAL so bringing it here isn't an issue.

Check out my thread Oakville/Toronto/GTA for images if you want to see how they turn out. Niagara was purely this camera if this helps at all??

Definatley buy one here. I just bought a Canon Rebel, it is a fantastic camera and came via Canada!! It was still cheaper here by about £200!! than if I had bought it there. SIlly I know but I ddi lots of research. I do not find any of there electrical stuff cheaper than here now. British wont put upwith being ripped off anymore. The power of the interenet has forced suppliers to be very competative, otherwise we will only buy it on the net forn US or Europe and ship it in ourselves even with the tax and duty it would often be cheaper.

Canada is not cheap for anything I have found, you may get more for your money food wise larger packs etc, but everything else is the same within reason.
The exchange rate is pants at the moment which makes it worse!

Hi

I bought a nikon cool pics camera in England.
It takes AA battieries so there are no worries about chargers and all that.
I took to Canada for a hol and used it for 2 and half weeks and only changed batteries once.
I took over 200 pics.

The worst you would have to do when you live in Canada is perhaps to buy a new battery charger for the rechargable batteries.

I am sorry - I have to disagree and so do my son and his wife and my sister. EVERYTHING in England is more expensive. If you go to a store and see a pair of jeans for £50 - chances are they are $50 in Canada. The same goes for food in restaurants or anywhere - if a sandwich costs £5 in England - its $5 in Canada. So that means everything is 2.3 or 2.4 times more expensive in England.

I have no idea about electrical goods. I spent so much money on absolutely nothing - including over 90p for a litre of petrol. If anything in England is cheaper - please tell me because the next time I will buy it!!!

Oh - I think I checked the price of Marmite and that might be cheaper in England.

I agree here, i would even go so far as saying everything in Canada is 50% cheaper!...like petrol in the UK, 90p + /litre, Canada, 90cents +/litre thats 50% cheaper in Canada than the UK just by the exchange rate alone..

Yes, but you have to go at least 3 times as far to get anywhere in Canada.

Including the corner store

That might be true on the praries but our corner store is 100yds away. If that store doesn't have it there's another one by the pub, 250yds the other way. There are all sorts of stores within half a mile so shopping isn't a reason to move the car. Admittedly, In the country or far 'burbs it's another story but Canada's one the world's most urbanised countries, living in a location where a car is required is a choice, not an obligation.

For example, the strip of camera stores (diigtal and regular) in Toronto is at Queen and Church, bus, tram and subway all go there.

I think the average yearly mileage is the same in the UK and Canada, isn't it? (20,000 km and 11 or 12,000 miles iirc).

Interested to note that my 5yr car warranty covers 100,000 *KM* here, but the same warranty in the US would have been 100,000 *miles*... the swindlers :p

Re: Digital Camera's In Canada

Depends where you go and what you buy. You seem to have done the tourist route whilst over hear from your posts, and you will find things very expensive. Everything is relative, canadians seem to earn less, so price of some goods are cheaper. Only when exchange rate is good does it make a difference for me on large purchases. I have heard many neighbours in Canada complain about their fuel prices, and even I noticed I spent quite a bit mainly because of the larger distances I travelled to get from house to shops for instance.
There are no corner shops where I live in Canada, so everywhere is a journey.
hence I spend twice as much on fuel. Costs the same as I would pay at home in end. Food is not that much cheaper unless you chose to buy in bulk.
Fresh food in the supermarkets, is not that nice -oversized fruit and veg that is tastless ( same here) I have taken to buy at a farm shop when there rather than the supermarkets. Eating out was a bit cheaper and certainly better value for money, especially the junk food, and you get huge portions, but not enough that I noticed in restaurants. Drink seemed the same. Clothes were the same as here, teenage daughter vouched for that. Cars vary greatly heaps of junk sell for quite a bit there that would go for scrap here! Again see the price then wait for them to add the tax and price is not so nice as you may have thought. Only thionk cheaper is housing for your money ( to us in UK) however this is realtive too. Most Canadian houses are made of wood and need on going maintenance. UK built of brick and last centuries with minimum up keep.

Years ago when I went to Florida, I noticed vast differences in prices compared to UK. Not any more, and feel that I have seen a change in the last 2 years. I also feel that for most house hold goods furnishings electrical goods etc, UK is very competitive, if you look around, and dont go to the first store you see. We have Wallmart her in Uk, Ikea for cheap ( and crap furnishing) and many supermarkets that sell very very cheap electrical goods phones clothes etc)
Visit any city or tourist town in UK and you will be seen off for food, entrance fees, and as England is one big tourist attraction we know how to rip tourists off. You have to shop like a "local"

You pay cheap fuel but car insurance is twice if not three four times what I pay here. All utility prices we pay for Canadian house are the same as we pay here, and even the property tax is the same almost.

What makes prices look cheap initially when I am in Canada is the fact that taxes are added on at the till. This is illegal here in UK unless you are a wholesaler. You know what you are paying on the ticket. Add the taxes and prices are then nearly 20% dearer than what you see on ticket.
Add to that you pay more tax than we do then all in all across the board things even themselves out.

Digital Cameras are better value here in the UK, this is due to the exchange rate being particualrly poor, so on average they are around 10% cheaper. If you factor in lower salary earnings in Canada the percentage is much higher than that. Electrical goods in the UK are now almost good value for money, but that won't keep me here.

Re: Digital Camera's In Canada

Oh for sure - the tax system is SO much better in the UK. I absolutely hate going to a restaurant and I am with someone where we have decided to pay for our own meals. You try to figure out what you share of the bill is and then you are supposed to add the tax to that and nobody knows if its GST and PST or just GST or just PST.

Mind you, apparently way back when, I assume I was in Canada but I can't remember it - we voted in favour of having it this ridiculous way for some stupid reason.

I wish we could vote it back again because this system is a pain in the you know what!
