Facilities: well this is a "depends where you live" question. Costs vary enormously. In Quebec some of the provincial run centres only cost $5pw. (Mind you - the waiting lists are v. long!!)

In Vancouver, where I live, my child goes to a daycare centre (full time costs about $450pm), but next month will be going to a family daycare provider (aka a childminder) and the cost will be just under $1k pm

The adult child ratios are much lower than in the UK. (Eg my childminder can take 7 children per adult).

This will give you a lot of the info about daycare http://www.cfc-efc.ca/wcfcca/caregiverinfo.html

Check out some of the links and see you can find out about your qualifications (but I'll also ask the staff at the daycare when I collect my child )

Sorry I have to join with my question instead of reply.
I though day care is free in Canada .
So Canada is not helping the families any more ?
How about Cnadian citizens, do they still pay for school ?

Vlad - the day care I'm referring to is the daycare for a pre-school aged child., Also you may have to pay for daycare for a child before /after school (if you need it) and school holidays.

Schools are "free" but there are some fees involved. Eg my child is starting kindergarten and I will be paying $25 for the year (excursions are extra). High school could be around $250 pa (which excludes compulsory excursions and activities).

You have to pay for schooling if you are here on a work or visitor permit.

Well..... again it depends where you are. however, the nurses I know in Vancouver threatened to go back to the UK (as the pay would not cover the fees for 2 kids and living expenses!) and as far as I know, they are exempt from paying school fees.

For high school students I have seen a sum of $8k pa.

Ring the school district and they will tell you.

1. Well my kid will start pre-K for 2.5 hr only and it's free but only limited number from local community will be accepted upon teacher evaluation and preferrence to kids whose mothers tonue is not english, and maybe some other criterias but that's the best you can get in USA.

2. So for kids from 6 mo to 4 yo I'll pay about $485 per month in Vancouver or will it depend on my income ?
is it from 9p.m - 3 p.m and then for overtime I'll pay extra ?

3. Also, I would like to know more about Medical care for a whole family, and maternity cost , etc.
Maybe there is some website for moms in Canada and I will direct my wife there.

We live in a multi-cultural community and met with few Canadian families but I could not find much from them as they left long before they had kids and as I understand East and West is like apples vs. orranges same as Los Angeles vs. New York.

I also read in some of your replies that you could show around Northern Vancouver , I am thinking to take a trip to BC and see if I like its lifestyle .

Regards,
Vladimir

The Canadian equivalent to nursery nurse (NVQ3) is an ECE (Early Childhood Education Certificate). Your Nursery Nurse qualification may not carry over to Canada. My ECE did NOT carry over to the UK. I have to take my NVQ3 fresh.

Good luck.

On another note: Research on the web the qualifications need for "home daycare". Also check out:

These people will set you up and everything.

Check out
http://www.labourmarketinformation.c...v_main&lcode=e

This is the hrdc web site's salary calculator. Click on the Wages/salary button the the left hand side bar.

Choose the area that you are moving to.
You want the Occupation /title option chosen and then you want to type in
Early Childhood Educator as the "search for" option.

Once you have done the seach the information will come up just below these fields.

If it gives you "no result" Choose a major city and try again.

Also Check out:

www.workopolis.com
it seems the be the next best thing...

Good Luck

Depends if the job is unionised or not .. or if you are self employed (ie operating your own daycare). Fully qualified union workers in BC get from $15 ph upwards.

I'm about to move to a family daycare and she is getting $6ph per child (but her busiest time will be 3pm onwards when the kids are out of school.

Expect $8/hr to start, you may get a wage subsidy if the employer thinks you are good enough and you jump enough hoops through the application process (usually around an extra .50c/hr) You will also likely be on-call which means no guaranteed hours as if numbers drop or are low you simply do not get paid.

Daycare three days a week for two kids costs me $686 per month in the Fraser Valley. I used to run a Licensed Daycare in PoCo and charged $680 for under 1's, $600 per month for 1-3 yr olds $525 for 3-5yr olds and $30 per day drop in. I had a waiting list as long as the M1 for two years straight. Vlad, there are child care subsidies for low income families, but they are difficult to qualify for if anyone is earning in the family. BC is expensive to live in, particularly in the Lower Mainland and there are not many "free" services. It may not be the wisest choice for you, but check it out nonetheless.

It sounds like BC is more expensive then Los Angeles .
Housing is very expensive, I am not converting CAD$ to USD$ as I will be earning in CAD$.
I noticed that housing in Torronto area would cost less , is that right ?

Let me tell you what I pay in Los Angeles:
1. Electric bill - $22/$50 ( Summer/Winter )
2. Phone Bill local - $28.5
3. Long Distance - $20 ( via internet )
3. Internet Verizon - $19.95 ( 256Mbit/128Mbit package )
4. Private day-care in Santa Monica - $685 pm ( for 3.5 hours )
5. Car insurance ( 2 cars ) - $133 ( $1600/12 )
6. Rent - $1865 ( 2 Bedroom on the channel )
7. Food ???? Will run log this month probably not less then $1000
8. Gas ( Pertolium ) - $130
9. Health insurance ( not covered if self-employed ) - $520 ( family )
10. 1 Car registration 1/3 of actual $200 / 6 month will increase 3 times next year.

Prices for some food like:
eggs - $2.5/dz
California Cucumbers - $2 / lbs
Canda green house cucumbers - $1.5 /lbs
tomatos - $2.99/lbs
roman letuce - $1.5 / lbs
delli foods ( cheeze, rost beef , etc ) - from $5.99 /lbs
Can soups - $2.3 - $3
Beer - $5.99 - $7.99

Apples - $0.49 - $1.09 /lbs
Water mellons $0.39 - $0.49 / lbs
Potatoes - 0.49 / lbs

If you are interested in something specific let me know, I go for my sandwich on my lunch break to Ralph's .
Oops !!! I forgot to list my Lunch money - $$$ 120 pm
Taxes in California :
If you are employed and earn 70K 1 person and your wife does not work your take home is $4200 pm
You need at least your wife bringing home $3000 pm in order to survive in Los Angeles.
