Customs charges

We've just been hit for $1050 in charges for the inspection of our container by the authorities in Montréal.
What complete B*****ds.
Everything was clearly in order too. Someone wants to make some extra money this month.

Well it is Xmas...obviously their kids want an X-Box or something.
$1050 seems steep - how do they justify that cost?

We got stung for about $700 so I can sympathise. That does sound an awful lot though - did they give you a breakdown of costs and why it should be so much ?

The charges are not levied by Canada Customs for the inspection, rather they are charges from the shipping/removal company for unpacking and repacking the container yes? So Canada Customs are just doing their job - random inspection of inbound shipments to ensure compliance with the law. The shipping company incurs costs in unloading and reloading the container so has to pass these on to the shipper - you. Its an unfortunate thing to have your shipment picked for inspection, and you should request a breakdown of costs from the removal co/shipping line to ensure you are not being fleeced for the loading/unloading. Aside from that there is not much you can do other than grin and bear it. You got dinged. It was luck of the draw.

Yes - our $700 was levied by the shipping/removals company at this end - not specifically by "Customs"

i thought the contracts were worded for door to door, ie any other costs were met by the shipping comapny - i'd read on here before about someone being asked to pay extra costs as the delivery truck they used was too big for the residential street; having to transfer to smaller vehicle - we got asked to pay CN costs as our container was'nt claimed within the 72hr window - as some paperwork mix up

Ask for a breakdown at the very least.
Best of luck
