Currency Changing
So, we have taken the plunge and got our house in Scotland ready to put on the market. The money from that will be buying the new home on Vancouver Island.
We have rental accommodation for the first few months sorted.
I have visited the wiki on the currency exchange companies, though some of our shipping companies have offered recommendations as well.
I guess my question is, has anyone used any companies recently, with what degree of satisfaction and are there any major pitfalls in getting our assets transferred into usable Canadian assets that anyone is aware of.
Thanks

Re: Currency Changing
We used xe.com, and still use them regularly to move smallish amounts of money across. When I was looking for a company to use I considered xe, moneycorp and halo, and it was xe that gave me the best rate. I had an issue with Halo not setting something up which I asked them to - not an actual money transfer, but it was enough to make me not want to give them my money!

We used Oanda, no complaints. The fees are fixed, so it's good if you're transferring large amounts, less good for small amounts, btu the main draw for us is that transfers up to a certain amount (can't remember offhand - £50k at once?) are protected, which was important for us. They were quick and easy, no complaints at all.

Re: Currency Changing
Over several years, & using several different companies, I came to the conclusion that UK bank to local Canadian Credit Union was my best option (once I did the legwork, & educated local CU on how to provide Swift/Iban info & receive monies ;-) ).
I get a surprisingly decent rate, ok fees, & access to traceable paperwork concerning provenance of funds.
Above experience relates to transfers of 500 to 90k GBP.

Do get quotes from your bank as well as the companies. Don't assume the currency exchange companies are automatically cheaper. That has not been my experience, but it does depend on your bank.

I would say Custom House (aka XE) because their HQ is on Govt St. in Victoria so you can physically go in there if you want.
No need to fax over passport details etc., just walk in.
