So because we changed our sin numbers the same week we put in our first tax refund we couldn't do it online and we ended up submitting it by post. We had a letter the other day from the "Refund examination program" saying they needed additional documents, however when I read the list of what they wanted it seemed like alot for a tax refund & when I asked friends they said they'd never submitted this stuff with theirs. I have been asked for copies of:
-Birth Certificate
-Marriage Certificate
-Social insurance card front and back (I don't have a card, just the paper they give you at CIC with the number on)
-Photocopies of two signed pieces of identification
-Two sample signatures on a blank sheet of paper
-Day, Month & year I arrived with a copy of the stamp in my passport to confirm
-Permanent resident card or Form IMM5292 for the wife & I
-Statement of world income for 2015
-First employment authorization or work permit (Which I don't have as it was taken away when we got PR)
-One of each current utility bill
-A copy of our property tax statement (which I don't have)
It seems like a lot of documents which seem of no relevance to me, friends who emigrated before me said they just handed their T4 and some ID to a tax place and that was it. I will be contacting CRA tomorrow to check it out aswell but wanted some opinions, the address listed is

Looks like a lot of info, maybe too much info for a scammer to ask for? Plus they normally send emails not letters
I agree that a call to the CRA would be be in order, just to find out if it's a scam or not. Try a different number for them that is not on the letter.

Worth a phone call - that is not the address of the Winnipeg tax office. This is not to suggest it is not genuine but it is better to check. Call 1-800-959-8281. This is the national number and they can check if a letter has been sent to you.

So to follow up, spoke to CRA this morning and they confirmed it was all genuine, as mentioned above it seems we were selected for an audit. Was definitely worth the 10 min phonecall though

In the OP's case, given some of the documents requested, I'm wondering whether the audit may have been triggered by a case of mistaken identity/someone with the same name.
CRA & RQ have both, at different times, flagged my returns & got all hot & bothered over a name mix-up.
