Vancouver would give it's right arm for 5 months of snow right now. We're having to fly the darn stuff in on helicopters for the games. No joke!

IT wages are a significantly lower in Vancouver than in the UK. Jobs paying over $100k are rare, and most are probably in the $40k to $80k range (depending on what exactly you are doing in IT). If you are earning 40k GBP and can find a $70k job here then you are going to have a similar standard of living to what you have now.

They are mixing it with straw to bulk it up too. I guess they are at the extremes of their contingency right now.

Thanks for your help.
Overall it's very like for like. We moved London to Vancouver and generally we're a little better off - but not by much.

Exchange rates mean nothing once you're here - it only effects the cash you're bringing with you.

As for salaries - take your UK salary and multiply by 2 - if Canadian salary is about the same you'll be fine, if it's significantly lower then take care...

Aha - nothing like a bit of straw filled snow to give the local athletes a bit of home advantage.

And, of course, if you have a UK income - even if it's not the primary one.

Vancouver is a lovely Pacific Rim city that embraces an active, outdoor lifestyle, but it's one of the most expensive cities in North America. Cost of living is more. Real estate is severely overvalued. However, it depends on what you're seeking. If you're willing to pay more money in exchange for a chance to live in an active environment where you can quickly access beaches, mountains, islands, and forests on a whim, fine. But Vancouver is the half way point between London and Hong Kong. It's also a city founded in 1886 so it lacks any sense of European history, or quick and cheap flights to large cities. Move to Vancouver to immerse yourself in a "west coast" lifestyle, but don't move here for cost of living purposes.

Eating out at restaurants, however, is fabulous. Vancouver has one of the better restaurant scenes in Canada and it's really affordable.

well said.

No its not. Its been a nice week here, unless you are on VANOC that is. It was 14 the other day. It may still cool down though - ever the optimist that I am.

Ok it's a bit more expensive, but certainly isn't 12x as much.... I pay about 1.5X I did in the UK, similar sort of horsepower vehicle....
