I thought that you were not allowed to bring in soft cheese. The customs site also notes 20kg or $20 value (presumably the least of) and I can't imagine a 3 months supply being under $20. Nor under 20kg in my case !

Never thought of that. Is there any noticeable change in taste/flavour?

When I just arrived, I felt most grocery items were more expensive here than in the UK. Now I think overall about the same after the 1.6 conversion. My salary is a little more with the 1.6 conversion, but of course less holiday here and working 8 hours a day instead of 7.5 in London but spending 20 minutes commute instead of one hour in London.

Anyhow, we used to buy about £80 per week from Sainsbury for two. Now we spent about $150 a week. We eat more meats, seafood, fruits and vegetables now.

The texture can get a little crumblier but tastes same.

The cheeses have various exp dates. The longest is 13 April. It's some extra mature cheddar.

The customs lady asked me if I had any soft cheese. I said 'Boursin' (don't intend to pay $8 for this when it was £1.10 in Tesco). She said it's fine and that by 'soft cheese' she meant feta or mozzarella. Basically cheeses that are in water.
She didn't ask me for weight or value.

True...ish.

There are a few who have UK income instead of or as well as Canadian income.

Usefully, there are still grocery and household items available for the same price or only a little more than we were paying in 2005.

.. so hears some tips to reduce your cost of living in Canada. Buy a property near the border with the States. Buy a weekend home, RV, trailer, cabin in the States, ditto near the border or in California, Arizona if you like the sun (Maui if you have the cash). Live, work, enjoy the health care, scenery, snow etc in Canada. Take off on Friday to you haven in the States, shop in Costco, buy gas, food, alcoholic beverages or eat out at ridiculously cheap prices compared to Canada. Return home on Sunday and line up in the queues trying to get back into Canada. Repeat process each week. Internet shop in US from Canada and have shipped to property in States. Simple you will save a fortune and get the best of both worlds (my boss does this virtually every week).
