What a horrible start to your new life in Canada.
Don't let it spoils things for you - its not a reflection of the people of Canada!

My heart goes out to you and your family. I worried a lot about our container when it came over in May, my husband thought I was mad at the the time, but it just goes to show. I hope they catch the mindless B,s that did it, but I doubt it.Good luck.

I'm absolutely gobsmacked to hear of this. I so feel for you and your family. Our container arrived last week and I was dreading finding the seal broken. Unluckily or luckily for us, customs had held the container due to a packing list not being provided by the shippers. I think our container came to Waterloo by rail via Montreal as well. It arrived in the same state as it had left the UK. I hope these thieving scumbags get their comeuppance.

Thanks for your good wishes but unfortunately, it is bad.
I have my couch, chairs and bed. Some items have been smashed, some have been slashed. The beloved guitars are gone as are our pioneer stuff, all the electricals really. The container was completely ransacked.
I am gutted but we will get thru this.
We wont know whats gone until we completely unpack.
I just wish I could get my hands on the bastards. Stealing is one thing, but to just ruin other things is incomprehensible.
All our clothes were just threw around the container.
Anyway, stiff upper lip and all that (even though I'm heartbroken really), but its just stuff yeah?
We are here to stay.

OP I really feel for you. I was totally paranoid while our stuff was in transit.
It was about the time that that container ship was wrecked on the South UK coast and people were looting the containers. I remember reading about how one contained all the worldly goods for a family that was emigrating, and the looters were ripping their stuff apart and dumping family photos in the water etc etc . I know I would have been gutted if that had happend to my things!

Thanks for all the support and karma.
Eamonn, I have to stay positive because I have been struggling in my first few weeks. I was really feeling settled this week but you know, life is too short. Others on this forum are having a much harder time than me. Triumph guy in Maple Leaf is grieving. This puts things into perspective.
I am about to go and look thru some boxes and see what I find.
They were after jewellery etc but that was with us, only decorative jewel boxes in container.
Anyway, I am going to see if I can find photos of my sons as children and babies. I have found our Wedding Album which had been messed with but is ok.
Wish me luck and once again, many thanks.

Very sorry to hear this - what a horrible thing to happen.
Can't say I've ever heard anyone on this forum report their container broken into.
I know we all insure for loss at sea, or damage in transit, etc - but I figure breaking into one of these things would have been rare. Sounds like they had plenty of time to rummage around in peace.
Lots of best wishes for good stuff to happen to you from here

Lot of things are missing. Mostly memorabilia and items of clothing apart from the stuff mentioned before.
What has upset me/pissed me off the most is that all I have photograph wise is my wedding album. All pics of kids growing up are gone.
I have visions of our photos just strewn in a field somewhere.
I just cant be arsed now with feeling down. My husband says yeah the photos are gone but the memories are still there. I have been onto various family members and they are gonna see what they have and try and get copies of photos.
Neil also said that he is not bothered about the guitars. They can all be replaced. He is just trying to make me feel better though.
The first one he ever bought, he saved up himself when he was 15. It took him 8 months. It was a pink flying V. Now over 20 years old. I dont think that will be replaced so easy.
For the last 2 nights though, I have slept in my own gorgeous bed instead of a blow up mattress and that has been so good.
We have just been extremely unlucky here. I do believe that for us it is just a one off and things are very soon gonna get better.
Cheers everyone.

As a guitar player myself I would be pretty gutted about the guitars. Having said that, I would be 100 times more gutted about the photos. That is truly awful. They have no value to any thief, but are priceless to you!
Most of our family photos are all digital (since 8 years ago) and we have back drives etc. but I would be devastated if we lost even one. Makes me think that when/if we do move we should keep backups back in Blighty in case something like this happens.
My condolences, this is awful. I hope your friends/relatives have some other photos...

yeah, the last 6 or 7 years are on PC. Neil transferred them to a portable hard drive before he moved here in March. It is just the ones before. Their first school photos etc but I know that my mum has some of these too.

That is disgusting. You would have thought that they would have some way of protecting people's possessions. I guess they just leave the containers wherever and all and sundry can gain access to them.

I was shocked to read you post, haven't been on the forum for a few weeks and yours was the first I read. My sympathies go out to you and your family.
You seem to be taking it on the chin, however, and life will throw these hurdles at you. It is all in the mental mindset how you overcome them.
I agree though, the vandalism is hard to believe, and so stupid. Let's hope the authorities find out where it happened and do their detective work.

We have done the same, put most onto disc, also backed up both comps onto disk, but of course the old ones and those of Grandparents etc are still in pic form, do you know of a company that would scan these onto disk ?
My sons comp has just broken with all the first years pics on there of there baby girl, I think an expert can retrieve them but what a pain.
Hopefully Tina you can get most if not all from family

I've not been on here for a while as we're busy packing etc.. as we're due to land in Calgary on the 27th September.
My wife told me about your post last week and the terrible, terrible thing that has happened to you.
With that positive attitude of yours, it really is incredible the way you're coping with it all. I would imagine the annoying thing here is, the photo's! As you say, useless to anyone else but priceless to you.
We've just had a couple of container quotes through, as we have five guitars we'll be taking and so must check the insurance on that one.
In view of what's happened to you I may place all the photos in a huge plastic container/lid. So "God -forbid" if these mindless MORONS choose our container, they can see that all that's in there is photo's and that they would have no monetary value to them, so it may be enough to sway their one and only brain cell to leave well alone.

If you don't mind me asking, who were your container people? I do hope they, and the insurance company, are looking after you given the terrible thing that's happened to you all.
Let's hope your relatives have copies of your kids etc... and here's wishing you all the very best.

I'm not going to say "keep your chin up" because I think you have lots more that in your positive attitude

Given what's happened - Incredible!
Yogi
