CARNA...1st step update
#16
Jase, let's try and sort a couple of things for you and ease your headache a little.
After discussing this with my better half, these are her thoughts, not legal advice, just her thoughts from her experience.
If your better half trained as a P2000 nurse, it is likely that she would have completed an 18 month Foundation period of P2000 before branching into the childerens' nursing RN(Child). That foundation period would have included Mental Health, Obstetrics/Maternity along with some Adult Nursing.
If she trained pre P2000, my wife's understanding is that she would have trained as a General Nurse initially before completing specialist training in childrens' nursing. If this was the case, then she should be able to show training for all disciplines as required by CARNA but may need an update before full Temporary Registration is granted. We have heard of people doing the update training when employed in Canada, courses provided by their employers or local universities. There are also some universities in the UK also offering update training courses designed for exactly this type of scenario.
However some areas of the UK had direct entry into childrens' nursing. If she completed this training then she may not have sufficient training in the other disciplines, i.e. Mental health and Obstetrics/maternity.
The best bet is to contact the NMC and her training universities and get confirmation of the hours training in each discipline. This will give her a better idea if she will meet the requirements of CARNA. Your wife will have a better idea than anyone else on the forum as to what study she completed and if there is likely to be a problem or not. This also goes for her experience since completing training. We believe that CARNA ask about experience from the previous 5 years to the application date.
It may be an idea as I suggested earlier to have a read through the Nursing forum and see what points have already been discussed.
Unfortunately we are all in the same boat to a certain degree and can only offer advice on our own experiences. Different people have different experiences and different problems/no problems with their applications.
My wife found the process with CARNA very smooth, without any problems. She sent off her application, along with the fees, contacted all of her training establishments and requested the documents be sent direct to CARNA and received confirmation from them within around 12 weeks. Obviously very different to Wispor's experience with them.
Other may agree or disagre with what I've written, but as I keep repeating, this is not legal advice and is only based on personal experience.
Chin up, chill out, have a cuppa and re-read this again slowly. As I said before, this can be a real minefiled, but hopefully a safe path through can be had with some assistance from those already part way through.
Best wishes and good luck,
Kev & Mandy

CARNA is the Albertan equivalent to the NMC in the UK. (Nursing & Midwifery Council).
In the UK, all nurses and midwives must be registered with the NMC in order to practise. The NMC covers the whole of the UK.
Each province or territory in Canada has their own organisation, which is why you should register with the correct organisation depending upon the province or territory in which you wish to practise.
CARNA is the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta.
